In the 1960s, Stoppard worked at the Bristol Evening Post. He was interested in philosophy (see "Jumpers") and got to know fellow-Czech Stephan Körner, then head of the philosophy department at Bristol University. Apparently Stoppard was permitted to sit in on some talks and seminars.

When I studied at Bristol many years later, Körner was still around as professor emeritus. So Tom and I would have had something to talk about. Had we ever met.

Didn't realize he was 88.

More shamefacedly I have to say I didn't connect the dots and realize it was his hand that wielded the pen that pushed the ink the led to the words that underlay so much that I have enjoyed, and sometimes admired.
