Seth Gordon
Like Aaron I’ve had some good meals at Chuan Yue. Is it world-changing? No, but it’s pretty solid, with a few atypical dishes. Bonus: if you’re going for Xmas, it’s not too far a walk (maybe twenty minutes) to go see the famous Dyker Heights Xmas lights before/after.
Steve R.
Even closer to the Dyker Heights lights is Golden Palace. https://www.goldenpalaceny.net. Our recent meal there was surprisingly very good and they have a deep menu that seems to attract a pretty diverse crowd. And they have parking.
joethefoodie
This place may not be curious to many, but this night time only cart on the corner of Grand and Chrystie Streets is worthy of this topic. We'd already had an early pre-show dinner at home (penne all'amatriciana), but since the first subway to come post-show was the D train, and our stop is Grand Street, how could I not? FWIW, Significant Eater demurs when asked if she'd like a few sticks, anytime we walk by these two... My guess is a husband and wife team. She takes orders, she takes money, AND she cooks! Never wanting to eat on the spot (way too many degenerates around and more as the evening progresses), I over ordered and it was packed to take home, where I can then blast if for a few minutes in the steam oven. Damn, these are good. Pork sticks, lamb sticks, enoki, rice cakes, chicken wings. Fatty, cumin-y, salty, spicy - everything you want, all on a stick!
Wilfrid
I salute those prices. How is Chinatown still cheap? I shopped there on Saturday and found fresh partridges for $8 each and sizable, head-on shrimp for $4.99 per lb.
Steve R.
There are just some things I don't want the answer to.

I notice an increase in some of the produce prices, especially on things like scallions, which for a long time were 2 bunches for $1, and now almost double that, yet I still got watercress at $1 a bunch. The brassicas all seem to either be the same price as before, or just up slightly. One funny thing happened to me last week; I stopped at a stand where the lady had a few heads of Romanesco, and I asked how much they were. She looked at me and said $4, whereas my guess is if I were an old Chinese grandma, they would've been half that price. As far as the partridge - that seems like a deal I would do - they're small birdies, after all, and in Chinatown you can get really small birdies (quail) at like 6 for $10. The head on, sizable shrimp at $5/lb... I'd probably avoid.
voyager
I find scallions to be very seasonal, or at least bouncing from, as you say, 2/$1 to almost $1 a bunch. Seldom in between. But I can’t buy romanesco for much under $5 HERE in CA.

Is that corner anywhere near the LES ? cuz I think it might be … FYI that link's “slightly” was my way of being OVERLY generous to YOU back then … therefore your resentment to my generosity yields this directness … Tell me, Joe, did ya slide on any piss or step in any shit on your way chez toi ? And I’m fully focused on feces of the human kind cause you were of course caked in canine crap and feline feces, for sure … twas the LES before Christmas, was it not ! And I'm very careful vis-a-vis stuff getting caked on - the shoes stay in the hall and get sprayed with Lysol!

Chambolle
Grand wager, Joe, but betting against Chambo, as we all know, is the best beeline to bankruptcy below Broome or the folly of a filthy filanthropist or a frickin’ fool ... pick your favorite F word, mon ami, but keep your cash away from me, for Chrystie's sake, geesh ! Enough of this shit, Joe … Come on Get Happy !
