Wilfrid
Tables for Two drew my attention to Le Rock, in ever unfashionable Rock Center. I don't see any posts about it. Any thoughts? Old school French menu with some Lyonnaise touches -- tablier de sapeur, cervelles de canut. Like Lords, it's reviving scallops and blood sausage; and the halibut au vin jaune sounds Jean-Georges-ish. Is it any good? I can't trust Hannah. She gives no sign she has ever had cervelles de canut or knows anything about it, so the description "brought to mind Boursin, the French equivalent of Philadelphia cream cheese" could mean it's crap, but could also mean it's a competent version of the dish. Do you trust Pete Wells, or Lee Hanson, or Riad Nasr? 😀
rozrapp
@Wilfrid I’m surprised you didn’t see Wells’ *** review of Le Rock this week.
Wilfrid
@rozrapp I am not, as I was on the road, but thanks for pointing it out. @Sneakeater Now why didn’t I think to search for “gratin”?
Sneakeater
It would have come up if you searched for "Rock" (along with a lot of posts about music).
Wilfrid
Well exactly. Odd thing about the Gratin thread is that although it is indeed called Le Rock in passing, it's repeatedly called Frenchette's "uptown place." Not surprised the name didn't stick with me. For all those many who care, me Wednesday working day began at 8.30 am and finished with my party closing The Bergoff. How I didn't find time for Pete Wells I can't imagine. Wilfrid
Koloman in the old Breslin space. Viennese-French. As usual appetizers, like short rib and tafelspitz terrine look more interesting than entrees (especially when one eliminates the duck breast).
small h
I've been cyber-stalking Mam - a Vietnamese pop-up on Forsyth St. that was only ever open on weekend evenings - since I first read about it a few months ago. I never managed to get there, and it closed for regular service last week. But they had a one-night-only pop-up tonight from 5:30 'til they sold out of crab noodles. I got there at 5:10, parked myself by the entrance, and was the second one in the door. Or rather, onto a low plastic stool at a table outside the front window. I cannot tell you how irritated my stupid hip was by this, but it's caused me enough trouble, and it wasn't going to ruin this for me, too. The menu had one thing on it: crab noodles, with optional add-ons like pork trotter and pork sausage and poached snails (which is what I chose). I also threw in an iced tamarind drink which came with a handful of chopped peanuts thrown over top, and what the hell is that about? The noodles were good, although they could've been hotter, temperature-wise. The woman seated next to me gave me one of her crullers and flagged down the lone server to get us some fermented shrimp paste and hot pepper. And then the noodles were even better. I'd heard very good things about this place. But... 7 hours ago, small h said: Or rather, onto a low plastic stool at a table outside the front window. When I saw this, I said fuck it. small h
And no takeout. And probably hats on the tables! I think I read that the crabs are green crabs from Aquabest, which is trying to get chefs to start cooking with them in order to get this invasive species under control. I seem to remember this being tried with nutria years ago.

small h
Even when I did eat meat, I don't remember ever eating a rodent. So I'm not sure what one would taste like.
Tubbs
The Atomix/Atoboy team new place Naro just opened in Rock center as well. Supposed to be more traditional Korean influences...tasting menu only.
