small h Posted July 10, 2025 Author Posted July 10, 2025 I knew lilies were not safe for cats, but that's very dire! Luckily, I ate them all and did not share with Laszlo. 2 Quote
Evelyn Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 My vet said she sees it a lot around Valentine's and Mother's Day because they are in a lot of flower arrangements. She says most time it is either fatal before the owner realizes how sick the cat is. Or, the owner doesn't want to spend a LOT of money to try to save the cat. 1 Quote
StephanieL Posted July 22, 2025 Posted July 22, 2025 We're experiencing a bout of cool weather here, so the chicken, vegetable, and brown rice soup N made yesterday was most welcome. 1 Quote
StephanieL Posted July 29, 2025 Posted July 29, 2025 Leftover store-bought rotisserie chicken and the last of my Carolina Gold rice were turned into chicken perloo. 1 Quote
small h Posted July 29, 2025 Author Posted July 29, 2025 Here, have a very complicated wedge salad. Also a ceviche and some half shell clams (from two days ago - I can't eat all this at once). Also, I learned that the Pura Vida fish guy is now with Seatuck, and Pura Vida has closed. This happened like a year ago, I'm just very slow to notice things. 1 Quote
MitchW Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 (edited) Admittedly when we are in tomato season, I go a little crazy at the farmer's market. A quick stop on a day when it was really too hot to be outside: Some plums up front. There was also white corn from Jersey. A quick sauté of the corn, sweet onion, zuke, and a few tomatoes. Served with pasta marinara. This isn't that pasta marinara mentioned upthread, but a pesto pasta made a couple of nights ago... Not classic, which would involve green beans and potatoes, but good nonetheless. Edited August 1, 2025 by MitchW 2 Quote

bloviatrix Posted August 3, 2025 Posted August 3, 2025 (edited) Bought a smoked whitefish last week so after purchasing potatoes and corn and a lot of herbs at the market I made smoked whitefish chowder. Earlier in the week I stuffed a rainbow trout with lemon and onions and roasted. Served with some eggplant. Edited August 3, 2025 by bloviatrix 2 Quote
StephanieL Posted August 4, 2025 Posted August 4, 2025 Head cold and not much appetite, so chicken noodle soup from our local fancy market. 1 Quote
MitchW Posted August 7, 2025 Posted August 7, 2025 Spanish-inspired potatoes, with onions, garlic, pimentón, saffron, chicken stock. Braised on the stove until nice and creamy. Served with: Crispy-skinned roast chicken thigh and sautéed escarole. Covering many countries. Market nectarine and assorted plum crisp. 1 Quote
maison rustique Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 @MitchW, if you weren't half a continent away, I'd be sitting on your back porch with an empty plate in my hand and a "Please Feed the Old Lady" sign at my feet all the time. 1 Quote

That’s really kind of you! Sadly, there is no back porch, nor is there a front porch! Curb, perhaps? 1 Quote
Wilfrid Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 I don't know when I last cooked arenque. I cook bacalao often enough. Okay, herring fillets, but very strongly smoked and salted. Boiled them, let them cool, then kept them in the pan in the fridge, probably more than twenty-four hours, changing the water regularly. Triumph arrives when you can nibble a bit off the fillet and it has the flavor but the saltiness has gone. I chopped them into a purée of cauliflower, warmed the mixture on the stove, then broke a duck egg over it. It was good and I will take a photo next time as I have plenty left. Quote
StephanieL Posted August 8, 2025 Posted August 8, 2025 (edited) It's in the high 80s here, so of course my visiting MIL wanted goat stew with couscous last night. Since she and I are being kept apart while the in-laws are here, I had my portion after it had cooled down a little, which frankly wasn't so bad. Edited August 8, 2025 by StephanieL Quote
MitchW Posted August 11, 2025 Posted August 11, 2025 I must have walked by this place a hundred times, but had never stopped in until Saturday, after an excursion to the greenmarket: Only there since 1908. I picked up a few things, including a box of cheese ravioli. And for dinner tonight: Cheese ravioli with burst sungold tomatoes, butter, parmesan, parsley and chives. Pretty damn good. 2 Quote

Wilfrid Posted August 12, 2025 Posted August 12, 2025 As promised, strips of smoked and formerly salted herring over a cauliflower mash with bacon pieces. Maybe not pretty but very edible. Quote
StephanieL Posted August 16, 2025 Posted August 16, 2025 A recipe that appeared at the end of one of Jamelle Bouie's columns: giant white beans with spinach, tomatoes, and feta. I used the newish RG Peruvian Limas. I thought the 1 1/2 pounds of spinach and 1/2 cup of dill were typos, but you really do need that much. Fussy recipe, but tasty. 1 Quote
MitchW Posted August 18, 2025 Posted August 18, 2025 Chicken scarpariello. Chicken (on the plate above, a wing and a leg), potatoes, Italian sausage, onions, garlic, cherry peppers, white wine, chicken stock, parsley. 1 Quote
maison rustique Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 I wasn't very hungry. Started with some chips and salsa. Then had some sliced peach and half of an almond croissant from my neighbor's daughter's bakery. Stuffed. Quote
small h Posted August 25, 2025 Author Posted August 25, 2025 I was able to dispatch a good 60% of my metastasizing mint by blitzing it into chutney. The eggplant and pepper are also homegrown. It's a little dicey on the balcony lately, since I'm (involuntarily) hosting a family of mourning doves nesting atop the dill, but we're all trying to get along. 1 Quote
maison rustique Posted August 29, 2025 Posted August 29, 2025 My wonderful sis and BIL came in last night (so we could get an early start packing today), and we went to the best local place here that I've talked about previously. Osteria Bianchi We ordered way too much food. Focaccia there is to die for. Made in-house and served with an olive oil-parmesan dipping sauce. I swear I could just eat that and be happy. We also ordered a mortadella pizza as an appetizer. BIL ordered appetizers meatballs and shrimp panzanella as his meal. Sis & I both ordered spaghetti carbonara. Had a lovely chianti with. They shared a chocolate torte while I tried an after dinner glass of italicus rosolio di bergamotto. It was tasty, but a little sweeter than I'd hoped. I doubt I'd drink it again. Got to chat a bit with owner Kelly Bianchi about her vintage stemware buys on eBay. My drink was served in vintage Moselle which my BIL went ga-ga over. Sorry, once again we took no photos. Got home to the raccuties on the deck entertaining us with their usual antics. Nothing cuter than baby wildlife. Quote
StephanieL Posted August 29, 2025 Posted August 29, 2025 I made the chicken and vegetable tagine recipe from 52 Shabbats--no chickpeas, lots of vegetables. I substituted yellow squash for eggplant to make it more "summery". Whole wheat couscous on the side. Quote
small h Posted August 30, 2025 Author Posted August 30, 2025 Yu choy, pink oyster mushrooms, shrimp. Very happy that the yu choy cooked down so much that I could just eat it all. Quote
MitchW Posted August 31, 2025 Posted August 31, 2025 Used my inherited Ibushi Gin to smoke some salmon the other night... On the left (top?): wild Alaskan sockeye salmon, and on the right: wild Alaskan king salmon - both were fresh. While I would up the smoke factor next time by adding more wood chips, they both came out very nice. Served with rice and some sautéed farmer's market green beans. 1 Quote
