Supper

Chowder, with both potatoes and RG Alubia Blancas and using homemade fish stock and the liquid from a can of baby clams. N also bought cod filets, and cooked them separately from everything else so that they wouldn't overcook. (In the same vein, she also kept the clams separated out.)  Sourdough baguette with cultured butter on the side, malva pudding (made by someone else) for dessert.

showing off the plating skills I didn't learn in cooking school:

Chicken pot-roasted and "carved" (well, pulled apart). Pan jus.  Twice-baked potato with twice as much sour cream as I should've put in. Peas and carrots.

Rib pork chop, sautéed and sliced off the bone.  Pan gravy from drippings, stock, vermouth, mustard, butter. Rancho Gordo's alubia blanca beans, stovetop cooked first, then baked with Parmigiano, olive oil, herbs, bread crumbs.  Thrice-baked potato.  Cole slaw on the side.

You won't believe it, but none of my favored vendors had brussells sprouts yet as of today.

I was all hot to trot on this.

(I mean, I'll be sick of brussells sprouts soon enough.)

That’s strange. I can always get them at Delicious Orchards. I bought some a few days ago. I’m planning to make salmon soon, and this recipe will make an excellent side.

(Today I’m making Alice’s Restaurant chili using the recipe I clipped years ago from the Times.)

There are these HUGE South Jersey stands at my GM that always have stuff that seems questionably in season.  And it makes me wonder:  is the climate in South Jersey THAT different?

We are in Central NJ. Delicious Orchards is a large indoor market. Their produce is very high quality and comes from various sources. They use local (NJ) whenever possible.

Re: your climate question. There can be big weather differences throughout the state. For example, the farm market near our house will get the first summer tomatoes from farms in South Jersey several weeks before their own tomatoes are ready.

Sure, because supermarkets don't exclusively stock local produce, and our greenmarkets do.

Delicious Orchard is not a supermarket. As I said in another post, it’s a large indoor food market with very high quality produce which is local whenever possible. In that respect, you are right.

I'm very familiar with it. I grew up in Monmouth County, and DO cookies were my traditional "break fast" after Yom Kippur. It's closer to a supermarket than it is to farmer's market, in that you can get lemons and coffee there, and (I would bet) Brussels sprouts year-round, as opposed to only when they are in season on the East coast. My local Trader Joe's also stocks some local produce, and I'd still call it a supermarket.

I forgot that you grew up in our area.

DO sells only food related items (I would put lemons and coffee in that category) and not the myriad of non-food items one finds in a supermarket like paper goods, cleaning supplies, kitchenware, over-the-counter drugs, etc. (many even have their own pharmacy). That’s why I consider DO a food market and not a supermarket.

I’ve been inside a Trader Joe’s once when one opened near our apartment. I looked around the produce dept. and considered buying something. But when I saw the check-out line snaking up and down all the aisles, I left. There is now a Trader Joe’s near us on Route 9, but I haven’t been there. Do they sell everything traditional supermarkets sell?
