What are you listening to

I think I can help here. Mitch might be saying either of the two following things (or he might not be distinguishing between them).

1. If you know something is going to be bad but you spend time and/or money on it anyway, then you should not complain about the waste of time and/or money.

2.  If you know something is going to be bad but you spend time and/or money on it anyway, then you should not criticize it afterwards.

The first is "complaining," the second is "criticizing." If Mitch is saying 1, he has a point. If he is saying 2, then I would disagree.

I can think of many occasions, including restaurants, where I have embarked on something I expected to be bad. I shouldn't complain about the waste of time and/or money but I am entitled to tell people how bad it was.

(I did realize, when I was going to restaurants for the Pink Pig that I expected to be bad, that it was not a good idea to tell my dinner guest "This is going to be dreadful.")

At this point, I wish I knew what I was saying.

Tell me this, though. Had you first listened to the song in question, over your speakers on your system sans video (I'm going under the assumption that the video was seen on a computer screen), like the way you used to critically review music, what would you think?

I would have said the song is lyrically empty -- these are the guys who wrote "Get Off of My Cloud" and "Sympathy for the Devil"? -- but I like the guitar a lot.  And the production style seems very on-point.

But everything that's offensive about the video has zero to do with the song.  Which is actually part of what's offensive about it: the video has zero to do with the song.

Also to be clear -- cuz I wasn't -- I "complained" that the hypothetical new Frenchette restaurant was a cash grab, not the Stones video.  The Stones video is a promotional tool; nobody's expected to pay anything for it.

Instead of being a cash grab, I'd say it's a desperation move.

I knew it was unclear to insert that "cash grab" language into the Frenchette hypo when I wrote it!

The song is still fine (albeit lyrically empty).  I'd be happy to hear it on AM radio -- if there still were such a thing.

Dexy's played a big part in my life many years ago, so I always consume what the completely nutty, inconsistent, often infuriating Kevin Rowland produces.

Which this year means "The Feminine Divine," a kind of concept album based around the idea that women should be valued (okay), primarily by being regarded as sexually-charged, imperious goddesses (hmmm). It's like, let's worship the matriarchy for a change while still having the hots for it.

Completely nutty, like I said. But as so often, a number of the tracks -- not all of them -- have that glorious, sweeping brass-and-strings-driven musicality that represent Dexy's at their best.

Aha, Jimmy Paterson from the original Dexy's was involved in the writing, and one of the best tracks he wrote with Rowland back in the 90s. Explains a lot.

BTW, "It's Alright, Kevin" will make you want to hide behind the armchair.
