Fay Jai
Of course, now watch, it'll fall thru at the last minute.... .... But, we're gonna think positive. Amber and I are buying a house in South Park. We ate at Juan Colarado's the day we viewed the house and I am excited to go to Muy Macho....(God, what a great name!) I'll be a regular attenedee at the Monday night meetings at The County Line as well. (YAY for Karaoke!) So.....What's good to eat down that way? I can count the number of times I've been to South Seattle on about 12 fingers, and most of those times it was basically near Safeco Field. Anybody got any suggestions? Preferably cheap, because after we start making our mortgage payments we may never be able to afford to eat out at a "good" place again...lol :raz: BTW>>>LOVE how everyone seems to have SP avatars lately! Scorched Palate
CONGRATS Jason and Amber! You'll find lots of good eats near you on the South End Taco Crawl thread. Rocky, don't you think it's time to do the Ambaum crawl? Maybe somewhere around, oh... I dunno... October 15? <sing> "Ample parking day or night... Fay Jai
Whoo Hoo! As soon as the Escrow Co gets the #'s to the county, (on paper, @ least...) We are Homeowners! YEE HAW!!! (Just BTW...Anyone watch Lost last night? Creepy, or what?) Ok...down to biz. Went to Muy Macho Monday night. Anita and tighe, this question is squarely marked to you 2, (but of cousre, I'd LOVE to know what other people think.) I ordered the Carnitas, as neither Amber or I had ever had them. (The menu proudly proclaimed that they are cooked in their own lart ) "Great!" I thought. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, juicy pork. Amber ordered the Carne Asada. We got our foor and were duly impressed with the size of the serving. Thumbs up there. However.... Are carnitas supposed to be dry? Amber loves Carne Asada, and has eaten alot of it, (Great flavor at Muy Macho,) but remarked that hers seemed dry, too. There was not that normal sputter of sizzling fat as the waitress set her plate down. As I didn't know what to expect, I was, well, underwhelmed. The pork was finely shredded and looked like it had been grilled on a flat grill.....that had not a drop of oil on it. The best way that I could describe it would be like sorta crispy, sorta leathery dry pork hash browns. I guess you could say that I was a little disappointed. Was this a correct interpretation of the dish? I was expecting, I dunno, jucier pork. Your opinions welcome! (Oh, yeah, and I live like, seriously, 3 minutes from Rascal's. Thanks for the advice, tighe, I'll be hitting that place up for sure!) ~Jason
SeaGal
Well, I'm not tighe or Anita, but I am a member of the Carnitas Cub for......anyway, these don't sound right to me. IMHO, good carnitas should have a nice ratio of crusty, crunchy crust/fat to juicy, tender meat. They shouldn't be dried out; nor should they have gooey clumps of steamed fat...ugh like those we found at El Rinconsito during the taco crawl. While I've had some decent to good versions in Seattle (see the Taco crawl thread), I've never found the perfection that exists in Mexico, (esp. the Michoacan area) where they deep fry whole pigs in lard and sell them by the pound. The closest I've come to this here is the chicharonnes at the El Paisano supermarket near White Center, but those have a higher ratio of fat to meat than carnitas. ExtraMSG in the Portland area has posted pictures of some great looking carnitas from around the Portland area. One of these days....... Anyway, I need to go to Muy Macho soon and try them out for myself. Congrats on your new house and a whole new food neighborhood to try out! Edited to add: Yes, Lost was weird and wonderful and I still want to know what happened to the rafters.
Scorched Palate
Welllll... there are shredded carnitas that can be good, but I definitely put them in the "a variation on..." category. No matter their form factor, they should never ever be dry. When you and Amber come to visit (and this goes for you, too, Jan... and Rocky and everyone else!), we will take you to our local taqueria, where they sell carnitas and buche by the pound. They fry up big chunks of pork shoulder, and then chop/shred it into smaller pieces for tacos, sopes, burritos and the like. <drool> ps: here's a crappy image. Yes, this massive pile of meat is ONE taco. Can you see the crispy love? No? Well, then you need to come down and see it in person. pps: Congrats on closing escrow!! When's the party? ppps: You might want to check out the latest Mexican Cooking Project over on the mexico board... Carnitas
tighe
This parallel thread thing gives me a headache. Posted on same thread on eG: Well, I'm not a carnitas afficionado, so I won't make any pronouncements about how they "should" be. I will say that I've never thought the carnitas at Muy were particularly dry however, so maybe you got a bad batch. The asada and al pastor (my fav) are sometimes dry. One thing I will say about Muy is that there's definitely variability in some of the qualities of the food. Try the ribs at Rascals, they're unconventional, but tasty. And I agree, carnitas are often shredded and/or chopped up for tacos--kinda makes it easier to eat than in big chunks. And they are sometimes a bit stringy, (depends on the cut of pork they use, I suppose) but in a good, tender, juicy, crunchy sort of way.....not dry, though, as you said. Scorched Palate
Just sneaking in to ask: which taqueria is it, Anita? Go away, troll. Just kidding.... It's Taco Loco, on Mission near Cole Hardware. They have a branch right outside the 24th Street BART stop, too, but I haven't verified that the carnitas are as righteous there. ~A

Fay Jai
More South Park Stories! The 2 year old neighbor kid snuck out of his house yesterday morning and was picked up at 6 am 4 blox away...His parents were COMPLETELY freaked out, can't blame 'em.... Same neighbor told me the other night that when he was coming home from work that he saw 4 guys strolling down the sidewalk of 14th Ave. (the main drag)...at 2 a.m.....all carrying baseball bats....FUN! Ok, down to biz....on the advice of someone that I thought I could trust, (NOT a MF'er, LOL ) I went to Jalisco in South Park last night. We walk in, and immediately notice that besides the staff, everyone is gringo. After the alarm bells quiet down, we order, I was jonesing BAD for Carne Asada, and Amber had tacos. We also had Margaritas, which were strong, and mine was unsettlingly salty. Chunky Salsa was ok. Took a bite of the Carne. 2 words. Worcestershire Sauce. 3 other words. No Charred Taste. Was tender and all, but just weird. Mexican Rice was offputtingly greasy. Apparently, I am Gringo Man, as our server asked me if I wanted butter for my tortillas. (NEVER been asked that before!) As we were finishing, Amber noticed that they were serving up the chips with bare hands. Ick. I'll stick with El Rinconsito, MUCH better Asada. Not that I've had much of it, but charred meat goodness. We both agreed that we don't need to go back. Went to Rascals as well last week. Amber had the Captain's Platter, which was good except for the fries, which was sad. I was transported back to the 80's, by both the decor and my....(drumroll please...) California Croissant Sandwich!!! All the classics...Croissant, Avocado, Turkey and Bacon...Man, takes me back! Then Amber ordered the Cheesecake, took one bite, and the expression on her face was so bad that the server hurriedly whisked it away. She said it tasted like it had sat out waaaaaay too long. Will try the ribs next time! ~Jason

Dude, Jalisco is a total poseur in that 'hood. The South Park branch is no better than any of the other Jaliscos, most located in significantly whiter parts of town. I'm yet to make it to Juan Colorado, but have heard good things, maybe we could meet there sometime if you're interested. The only good dessert I've had at Rascals is the chocolate sunday, except for the time they used balsamic instead of chocolate sauce, but that's a story for another day. Don't fear the Chinese side of the menu, there are some good items there.

We've been to Juan Colarado's once. Not great, BUT, we were the only gringos there...so go figure... I am told that it is REALLY, REALLY scary there at night. No kidding. I've heard good things about the Taco truck in the parking lot of T21 in Georgetown, but again, its reputation precedes it. Might make it in there sometime, however, one of my ex-employees works there and I might try to go with him sometime. Sorta unrelated, but not really...Anyone (besides me,) skeeved out by places that serve brains? I'm guessing that the brains that I see for sale 'ound here are cow brains, and that makes me nervous. Am I wrong and are they pigs brains? Am I being a Nervous Nellie? ~Jason
