As I think Orik said, "it is that time again."   I will be in Paris for a few days in the beginning of December, any recommendations? New ones, old standbys? Places to avoid?   I have a bunch o

I suspect Bruni or Paglia wrote that review.

Had lunch here last week and it was so good I've booked dinner for next month!.   Added bonus of being right by the metro on the 8 line.

Voyager - have you been to Jaïs by any chance?

No. But i see that John Talbott and Americans on Trip Advisor love it. ^_^

John Talbott is completely random so I don't know that this is a negative (or a positive) :D

Just as an aside, you all know that John only does lunches, right?

I know. That doesn't quite account for the randomness, although it does reduce relevance to me.

Taillevent is really quite good (again). And some decent value on the middle to high end of the wine list. Very classic food - better than my last meal at L'Ambroisie. I went slightly against my will with a friend who recommended it but had an excellent meal.

Terrific lunch at Yoshinori a few days ago. One of the puddings was a bit unsuccessful - strawberries in a sort of jelly but the rest was really delicious. Superb pea based starter with a mousse made of cauliflower, and a puree of the pods,

nice bit of hake, everything very accurately cooked. Small and friendly service.

Arrived in Paris yesterday, staying way down in the 16th/Auteuil neighborhood. After a few months in lands of no spice (Scotland and Normandy), I headed to the well-reviewed Le Pont de Sichuan. Arg, closed for August! But who knew that the area there is saturated with asian (mostly japanese) restaurants? Probably plenty of people, but not me. Anyway, was able to find a nice enough lunch, but I need to be careful about making sure that places are open when I get a craving.

That area has been saturated with (mostly) cheap Japanese restaurants for more than four decades now. Where did you end up finding a nice enough lunch?

Le Pont de Sichuan is well-reviewed but I wasn't awed by it. "Sichuan" food in Paris has the same problems as mostly everywhere else including China. Chungking Express in the 9th churns up a very decent Chongqing hotpot. Le Grand Bol (11th) is amazingly good for such a small, unconspicuous place. Tricotin (13th, Cambodian-Chinese) remains tops for dim sum. Yunnan chefs hop all around the city for better-paid jobs so no Yunnan restaurant is very consistent here.

Vietnamese food can be really really good in Paris.

If you want Isaan (Lao) food that is spicy enough, head for Lao Thai on rue de Tolbiac and order a yam of any sort (transparent noodles, cuttlefish, etc.) or laap neua.

Café des Musées (IN the Marais), À la Renaissance (place Voltaire), Amarante (Bastille), Botanique (near République), Le Sot-l'y-laisse, Yard (11th). Yard's small-plates bar in my opinion better than the restaurant.

Botanique was a good recommendation Ppois, thanks.

Good wine list, very technically correct and delicious food.

I had a terrific pigeon with a really first class sauce, perfect cuisson on the crown which had been roasted with smoky herbs, legs kind of confit separately.

Something strange about the lighting or the way the tables are laid out though ..

That sounds more like a description of the street level restaurant. It is usually the lunch place, the upstairs dining room being used at dinner time. I much prefer the upstairs room. Ground floor too dark.

Korus (formerly Iratze) is another recommendation. Not been there yet but hearing plenty of good about it, and seeing extremely appetizing photos come out of it every now and then.
