Wilfrid Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Isn’t it hard to pick up potato chips with a teaspoon? I am at a fancy reception where, for hygiene reasons, nuts, chips and pretzels are being served in bowls with teaspoons. The nuts, no problem. Haven’t tried balancing a pretzel yet. Quote
Wilfrid Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 I am five minutes from Sardi’s where, back in the day, we would plunge into communal bowls of nuts and crackers up to our wrists. I never caught nothing. That I know of. Quote

Evelyn Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 The Rolling Stones just added LV to their 2024 tour. Why you ask does that make me laugh. Because the tour is being sponsored by AARP 😁🤣🤣. Positively brilliant marketing move ⭐ 1 4 Quote

Wilfrid Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 So I stroll past the Harlem Renaissance hotel on 125th, or rather past the old Victoria theater that serves as its lobby (same block as the Apollo) and I pause to read a sign about the Victoria restaurant inside. It’s some weird blurb about celebrating the history of Harlem through Cajun cuisine. Similar sentiment to be found on the website (see below). I showed this to my daughter who shrewdly suggested it should be soul food. Mm. But it’s worse than that, isn’t it? I have a dollar says whoever made up this nonsense thinks that Cajuns are Black. Anyway, what the cooking of displaced, white French-Canadians has to do with the history of Harlem is a mystery to me. 1 Quote

Sneakeater Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 Maybe they thought they were going to Upper Manhattan and they ended up in Louisiana by mistake? Quote
Wilfrid Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 In fact the ships tried to put in repeatedly at ports down the east coast, but were deterred until they reached (French-speaking) Louisiana. Maybe a chef swam up the Harlem river. Quote
Sneakeater Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 For some reason Bostonian historian Francis Parkman tried to make it seem like New England wasn't hostile to the Acadians. (I mean those books are great anyway.) Quote
Sneakeater Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 (edited) I don't remember reading too much about New England's role in this in "Evangeline" (written by someone who was from a part of New England where Acadians had actually lived before the expulsion) either. Although to tell the truth I've tried to drive that poem out of my mind to the extent I could. Edited November 26, 2023 by Sneakeater Quote
