Just curious: why don't you care for La Traviata?

well, there's the general absurdity of an Italian restaurant entitled "The Whore"....which loses the authenticity label right there. Then there's the problem that it's an Italian-American restaurant, not an Italian restaurant (which makes sense considering the name).

Italian-American food can be terrific and La Traviata may well be a good example of the genre. But it's a different cuisine than Italian and I accordingly categorize it separately.

edit: to be clear, I'm not saying I don't care for La Traviata (I haven't been)....I am saying that like every restaurant in Austin not named Vespaio, it is not an Italian restaurant.

a further edit: La Traviata is an Italian-American restaurant for the following reasons:

A. the name.

B. the pasta items are part of the entrees.

C. the pastas offered are mostly the greatest hits of Italian-American food (albeit, yes, you will find them in Italy...but not in the same restaurant).

D. chicken parmesan, chicken saltimbocca (?), rigatoni with proscuitto and peas, pistachio-crusted salmon, veal piccata and tenderloin with gorgonzola are among the Italian-American cliches/greatest hits on the menu.

yeah, the portions at Vespaio are huge (which kind of sucks for solo dining).

Speaking as a frequent solo diner, I like going to restaurants with generous portions. I've learned to ask for the 'to go' box first thing, before I begin eating. That way, the food still looks and is far more appetizing than if you scoop it up after you've had your way with it; not to mention that I don't eat as much if it's already been removed from my plate.

And then I take it home. I can usually get three meals out of one of those large-portion places. Cooking for one can be a little tedious, too, so in addition to getting one meal out at a restaurant, I get two more meals at home that I don't have to cook.

It also makes eating out more cost-effective.

gotcha. but if you're going out afterward...then there's the storage issue. but, yeah, at Sichuan Garden, for example, I usually order enough for three or four people and then take it all home.

I've got a little buddy cooler that I stick stuff into if I'm going to a movie afterward or something. I don't know... May not be worth it to everyone, but it is to me.
