The Olympics

white snow, brown rage

While watching a bunch of young, white Olympians zipping and flipping around on their newfangled snowboards the other night, I couldn't help thinking: What if Bangladesh, my parents' native land, had the geopolitical muscle to turn an extremely Bangladeshi-friendly activity into an Olympic sport?

did anyone see the brian gumbel rant about the winter olympics on hbo? it was great.

i think the curling guys (or women) who slide that rock should be better teamates and let their teamates slide a few rocks and do some sweeping themselves. they are so damn selfish!

They even went so far as to change the name of the city where the Olympics are being held.

The name of the city for us Americans, is Turin. But NBC Sports President Dick Ebersol thought "Torino" would sell better so ran with it.

I guess it's just a question of semantics but, to me, choosing one common, legal and perfectly acceptable name of a city (which, in fact, its residents actually prefer) over another common, legal and perfectly acceptable name of a city isn't exactly the same as 'changing the name.'

I mean, it's not like Ebersol decided to refer to it as 'Dickorino' or something.

What is up with Shani Davis?  He is such a pill.

I don't blame Shani Davis one bit. Chad Hedrick has been giving him shit all week, in public and in the press. Hedrick had delusions of grandeur and blames Davis for not participating in the team pursuit event. It would have given Hedrick a shot of tying Heiden's record for 5 golds in a Winter Games, though he was totally kidding himself. Hedrick had been pressuring Davis before the event even though Davis had let it be known way in advance that he had ZERO interest and wanted to save his energy for his specialty event, the 1000 m.

The US lost out in the quarterfinals in team pursuit and Hedrick has been bitchin and moaning ever since. The fact that the US Speedskating powers-that-be let Hedrick air all this out in the press makes it that much worse. From his selfish comments, Hedrick has shown himself to be a total ass.

By winning gold last night, Davis shut them up big time and proved he made the right decision, making history along the way.

Tuesday: They go head-to-head in the 1500 m. I'll be rooting for Shani Davis.

BTW, Joey Cheek, the gold medalist in the 500m and silver in the 1000 m, has shown himself to be a total class act. He has added his silver medal winnings to charity and has been backing up Davis' decision from the get.

My problem with Davis was with the interview he gave after the race. You finally win gold - something you've devoted your life to, be a little happy and gracious. Additionally, I know it's not about the sponsorships, but his behavior cost him sponsors.

With sports like speedskating when you get attention once every 4 years you need to remember that you are an ambassador of your sport. Little kids are watching waiting to be inspired and his attititude was a major turn off. Fortunately, Joey Cheek is a total class act.

I don't think you understand the whole story. There is major discord between Davis and the US Speedskating Association. They have refused to back him and have basically supported Hedrick as he goes after Davis in the press. And the press has been complicit by stirring up the rivalry -- they smell a good story, so they have been feeding the rancor.

Davis has remained silent all week despite unwarranted attacks. Smartly he realized that he would just be feeding the fire and has not even tried to defend himself. Instead he proved himself where it counts: on the ice. What you saw last night was his bitterness about the whole situation, and he doesn't want to 'reward' a press that was dumping on him just hours before.

If you noticed, Davis got a standing O from the mostly Dutch audience. They respect him and respected his extraordinary performance. Hedrick is a spoiled insincere jerk. He's a loudmouth and stupid to boot. I hope he bites it.

I

'm just catching up on the Davis/Herick controversy, but from a quick review of the articles and background, it certainly appears that hedrick is being a bit of a prick. It's not davis' job to make sure Hendrick's medals in 5 categories...he didn't join the olympic team for Hendricks to meet that goal, he did it so that HE could win a medal. Skating is not soccer or hockey, its not a team effort, its man against clock. Lumping figure and speed together, How happy do you think Sacsha and Kimmie are about having to deal with Kwan's angst, Emily's arrival, Sarah's shadow, et al? If skating were a team sport, you'd see Kimmie and Sasha tearfully escorting Kwan to the plane...puhleeze. don't forget, in some skating events, team approach is against the rules, although Apollo might point out a few instances where some skaters flaunted those regs.

and how about the snowboarder, Leslie, who lost the gold. Her nonchalance was either ignorance, or fake. 20 years old, all that enthusiasm, all that training...what a beginner's mistake. It ain't over till its over.
