Wilfrid
“Sometimes I Think About Dying” (MUBI). I suspected this might be an example of the kind of slow-moving, thoughtful movie I prefer. Even though the star has something to do with some flashy sci-fi nonsense. I was right. Apparently it’s set in some unappealing place in Oregon, and the entire solution to the main character’s crushing depression might be, move. But it is moving, even though she doesn’t move, and good ensemble cast. I would have erased 90% of the score. *Spoiler Alert* This didn’t spoil the movie for me but (1) that nascent relationship between boss and worker is inappropriate and (2) and much more serious, if you hear crystal clear suicidal ideation from someone reporting to you, go immediately to HR, faster than you can run. Some of us have been there.
Wilfrid
I bet there were earlier posts about “Challengers.” It’s way too long (none of Zendaya’s scenes are long enough). It seeks a complex, back-and-forth chronology, but that means when two of the main characters have a powerful and unexplained interaction we are going to have to wait to see the earlier reason for that. The intimations of sexual interest between the two male characters, okay, not really convincing. Zendaya gets to play a character with very different affects, pre- and post-tennis career. You don’t need to me to review Zendaya. She will make better movies.
Wilfrid
Not that it’s bad and Zendaya is in it.
maison rustique
I don't watch a lot and am years behind on movies and series. I just finished The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart last night and am ready to start The Beekeeper tonight.
StephanieL
On a '70s kick: making my way through Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution that recently aired on PBS and watching the 1977 documentary Gay USA on TCM.

StephanieL
Yes, I saw it when it first aired. Blew me away. What I really need to see is Wattstax.

hollywood
Trash TV entry. MILF Manor II You get a big mansion in Canada and you bring in 6 more or less cougars. Then you invite a half-dozen single dads. Also in residence are their half-dozen sons. All are encouraged through various games to make moves on one another. Sleazy, awkward, amusing. Did I mention the RILFYI? It's the room I'd like to fuck you in. Trashy is as trashy does.
Wilfrid
To my shame, when I can’t read any more and can’t face cable news and have no movies lined up… American Ninja Warrior. There is nothing to say in its favor and I get a sore throat yelling along with the name of the show. But I do enough high art, right? 😳
Wilfrid
I took myself to the movies, completely overlooking how cold movie theaters can be at the height of summer. Never mind, it was Godard's Band a Part at the Paris Theater near the Plaza. I have seen it before, streaming on TV. It turned out I had also seen Les Fiancés Du Pont Macdonald, the short by Agnes Varda that preceded it. I just had no recollection of the title. Very funny, with an improbably young and handsome Godard in the lead role. If you want to laugh for four or five minutes, it's on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z5QrOhTuUQ
StephanieL
For the start of the Olympics, TCM ran several Olympics documentaries. I just finished watching one showing the 1924 Paris Olympics, the games with Paavo Nurmi (who kept checking his watch during his races), Johnny Weissmuller, and Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddel of Chariots of Fire fame. In a very French, very of-its-time touch, the marathoners took both water and wine breaks.

splinky
Watching "Love, Charlie" on Netflix. It's so odd to me that people have all but forgotten about Charlie Trotter and how exciting what he accomplished was.
maison rustique
I started about 3 different series this past week and found them to be depressing me so I aborted. Last night I started re-watching Northern Exposure on Prime. I hadn't seen it since it was originally out, so it has been a while. I'd completely forgotten how well done it is and how delightful the characters are.

Wilfrid
“Good Girls Guide to Murder” on Netflix, mainly because Emma Myers was such a great foil to Jenna Ortega in “Wednesday”. It is fun although it took me a couple of episodes to adjust to Emma’s alleged British accent. As it moves towards finale, I am wishing there was a Jenn Ortega character to beat ass on some of the annoying dudes.
Wilfrid
I would recommend the above as the last two episodes (of 6) got really exciting. And I was understanding most of the dialogue by that stage. I don’t think this is a spoiler, but just as in a horror movie you should never, ever go down to the basement, in a tangled murder mystery when someone tells you “Drink up,” do not FFS drink up. Curious to see what Emma Myers does next. Like Ortega, she doesn’t fit a Hollywood leading lady frame, but increasingly women actors don’t. But she’s so likable. hollywood
"The Godfather" (restored version). Had not seen this since it's release. Brando and Pacino looked really good. When you know the story re-watching is less impressive than a first viewing, but still Coppola was at the top of his game.

I've watched it like 1,000 times - and still can't decide whether I like "1" or "2" the most.
Wilfrid
For the record, I have still never seen any Godfather movies. I did read the book as a teenager and was suitably shocked.

hollywood
If you lack the patience for "The Godfather" may I suggest another film from 1972? "Bikinis y Rock" is a Spanish language comedy (that's only about 90 minutes). It features some amazing 70s fashion, a woman dressing like Cher, another like Joan Collins, a guy who looks like Peter Tork and a rock band El Ritual. Not much of a plot, but fun. Wilfrid
Currently halfway through "Spirit of the Beehive" (1973) which is spell-binding. The director (see NYer) has a new movie out that resurfaces some themes from that old movie and I can go see it at Film Forum this week.
