The Yankees Thread

One must assume they're expecting Nady to be an everyday player in 2010. How about comparing Melky with Swisher, though? Swisher got the everyday slot last season only because of Nady's injury - he was picked up for security at first base before the Texeira deal was concluded. He gave us a better season than anyone expected, but was at sea in the post-season and ultimately benched. Melky had an extraordinary ALCS series, and although his world series was less impressive, he didn't look as outmatched by the pitching as Swisher. Melky is 25, Swisher 29 - if either of them is going to improve next year, it's Melky.

Is it really a question of Melky being unable to play right field? (Of course, the answer may be that Vasquez is the best we can do as far as starters are concerned, and this was the trade we had to make.)

Let's just focus on your last sentence since that's the crux of it, in my opinion. You can indeed compare Melky to Swisher.... and Melky comes up better. Which, of course, is why he went for Vasquez. Can you picture them trading Vasquez for Swisher? The Yankees (finally, I hope) will put Chamberlain back where he belongs and really needed a 3-4 starter. The only aspect of Rich's post I might disagree with is that Petitte might just be #2 and Burkett might not stop his slide at #3 if Vasquez is as good as some think.

I agree that Pettitte is really the #2 guy, but they won't pitch Sabathia and Pettitte back to back because both are lefties. Burnett will still get the two slot simply to break up the southpaws. Burnett needs to work on pitching from the stretch - that's what gets him in trouble. His breaking ball doesn't have the downward bite that it does from the wind-up. Coaches - especially Guidry - will work on that during the Spring.

With respect to Melky vs. Swisher. I would pick Swisher. Sure Melky is better defensively, but Swisher has more power than Melky ever will and draws tons of walks. (He's also a major clubhouse positive presence.) The Yankees didn't need Granderson, Melky and Gardner on the same team and Melky was worth more in trade value than Gardner.

Swisher won't play first - Johnson is their back-up. He's an average right fielder whose clutch, will get on base from the nine slot and turn the batting order over more than Melky. Remember Melky had four years to develop - he's a .270 hitter with a max of 15hrs, doesn't walk a lot and doesn't know how to steal bases. With his speed he should have been a 30-40 steal guy.

Oh what a comeback game that was yesterday! Great cheers for the Boomer; great bottom of the ninth (!), two out comeback; and then the exciting finish in the 12th. It's a thrill to tune in whenever

I love Jeter's leather this time of year.

I have heard Yankees fans, conscious of the team's pitching deficiencies, say that the Cardinals will go all the way this year.

Nady. The plan last year was Texeira at first and Nady in right and Swisher on the bench. I recall an interview with Swisher and Nady with Swisher saying he didn't expect to get many opportunities to play (but he'd be ready, blah blah).

While I agree with Steve R. that choosing Swisher ahead of Melky was a trade-based decision, I am not so sure about the case for Swisher in the abstract. Swisher is a .245 hitter, he hasn't had a big home run year since 2006 (although 2009 was surely better than expected), and although he has power and draws walks, I am not convinced he's better at putting the ball in play in clutch situations than Melky - and especially on a post-season stage. As for stolen bases, the comparison is with Swisher, not Johnson, and Melky's record is far superior - Swisher's maximum seems to be three, Melky usually in double figures.

A different comparison; I see commentators today getting all excited over having Gardner batting ninth (thus before Jeter) and playing defense every day. That's what he was tagged to do last year, but it didn't take long for Melky to replace him because he was simply putting up sufficiently better offensive figures.

True but that was with Melky and Damon on the team. Right now the four outfielders on the roster are Granderson, Swisher, Gardner and Hoffman. They still need to sign Nady (he's a free agent) unless they swoop in at the last moment and steal Bay (or Damon comes to his senses and accepts $19 million for two years). But that still leaves them with an open spot in RF. Neither Gardner or Hoffman are everyday players, though both are valuable bench guys.

Yes, Nady assuming he's healthy and they re-sign him.

Okay, let's assume they sign Nady or another outfielder.

Then the starting outfield is Nady (or the other guy) lf, Granderson cf and Swisher rf. Who takes Swisher's place as the starter if he doesn't play?

Are we at cross-purposes? I was saying that I'd rather have lost Swisher than Cabrera (although I understand that probably wasn't the choice presented), so the answer to your question is Cabrera. Sorry if I misunderstood. I would rather have Cabrera on the team than Swisher.

Any basis in the blog or newspaper world for the Nady speculation?

Haven't caught up with this thread, still mourning the loss of Matsui, my favorite.

Not anywhere in the media - just my gut because I understand how they feel about him.

Damon is certainly in play again as well - somebody has to play left field and I'm not sure I can hold up for a full 162-game season.
