Wilfrid
A few days ago I cornered some ugly flying bug in the bathroom and murdered it with spray. Didn’t think about it. Watching the news since, I realize it was a mosquito. Glad I won that fight.
small h
@maison rustique I’m so sorry for your loss. I know you have more good memories than bad ones, and that those will sustain you.
voyager
Our condolences. You deserve some peace, as did your husband. Roz, supranuclear palsy is indeed a horrific diagnosis. Similar symptoms as ALS, but can be long lasting. My niece suffered for over 12 years.

bloviatrix
@maison rustique - my condolences on the loss of your husband. I hope that you will find comfort in memories of happier times and that the pain of the last few years fades away. Please let your family and friends take care of you when they try. You need it. maison rustique
Thank you all so much. I have been grieving in various ways for at least 2 years, so it isn't completely overwhelming for me. I will figure out what I want my life to look like now and work toward that. I'm thankful that we chose a new financial advisor (friend of my sister who I already knew a little) a year or so ago and he hooked me up with his estate/tax attorney. They have been godsends. Since we already knew what we were dealing with, much of the legal stuff has already been done or is set to go. We moved everything out of his room yesterday (I do not know what I'd do with my sister and her husband.) so now the garage and house are full of "stuff". Tons of laundry to do so I can donate all the clothes. My nephew wants a couple of chairs and I'll try to work on him to take a few other things, too. Lots of phone calls to make. Those are the hard things.

Evelyn
@maison rustique my condolences. I am glad you have such a good support system. And that your husband’s pain has ended. While I know your heart hurts at his loss, it holds many memories of your years together. And those will help you heal and move onto your path for the future you decide on. Take care of yourself.

bloviatrix
Season starts on Sunday. New team, new number. Unlike the NHL, it's home whites. Blue is for the road.
StephanieL
Now that I know youth ice hockey starts in the fall, I'm not surprised that my nephew is starting fall baseball on Monday.
bloviatrix
Fall baseball started today for us. Kid made an amazing catch at short to end the second inning. He struck out twice and was hit by pitch once (by his oldest friend, who was very apologetic post-game). This year the team is made up of kids aged 10 -12. There was a kid on the other team who has about 18 inches and 100 pounds on my kid. Game ended in a tie because the winning run failed to slide into home. bloviatrix
First goal of the team's season was scored by the kid!!! It's his first career goal. They won 6-0. Game two is at 4:45.
maison rustique
My neighbor's daughter who has a pastry business got married this weekend. Neighbors had lots of people around all week and I told them to use the half of the driveway that isn't used. So, they did. As a thank you, I got a lovely gift of Rai's Bake Shoppe macarons--vanilla bean, matcha, raspberry and my very favorite honey and lavender.I AND, I had asked on our neighborhood Facebook group if any of the kid's groups or classes were having a car wash fundraiser because I really needed a car wash. Another neighbor showed up and detailed my car. I have the best neighbors here. I will really miss them when I finally get out of this house.
Wilfrid
It may be Friday 13th but I am in an old bar where they know me and the music playing I remember from traveling with my mother and father as a pre-teen. Also they just gifted me a tapa.

I haven't been to Spain since I turned 30 there (so, like, a couple of weeks ago), but I remember that like it was yesterday.
Wilfrid
Ah, never ever in Barcelona. In the south, perhaps in Madrid, but certainly in smaller places, yes a free tapa per drink (at least when I was there, what 7 or more years ago). In Barcelona, tapas means small plates on a priced menu. And to be fair, the origins of tapas are in the hot south.
Wilfrid
Shit, they just brought me a big bowl of olives I don’t particularly need. I guess I spent some money here.
Wilfrid
I’ll put this here rather than in the Barcelona thread because it means a lot to me. How many years ago did I first meet fellow eGullet members in a bar; the Johnsons, Liza, Macrosan.? And I know for sure I was wearing, perhaps pretentiously, a beret from Barcelona. I still have it; it’s over thirty years old. I bought it and many subsequent Catalunyan berets from Sombreria Obach in the Barri Gotic. The old guy I bought from died a few years back. The store turned 100 this year and I was able to go and congratulate the grandson who is now running it. It was a happy thing to do. Of course, I didn’t need another hat because I have 7 or 8 and they never wear out. (See my profile photo.)
