Reasons to be Cheerful

Recommended Posts

I'm a member of a Facebook group for residents of Phoenicia, NY (I don't live there, but H & I have a cabin not far away). This morning a woman posted a somewhat panicked rant that a bear had destroyed not only her chicken coop but the electronic fence around it, and killed several of her chickens, and this is the second time it's happened, and could someone please take the rest of her flock because she and her kids can't keep going through this.

Within two hours, she had 25 responses, with half offering to take the chickens and the other half pinging someone who might want them. She now has a plan to re-home the birds. It's nice to read about people stepping up and helping out.

Occasionally we see a bear in the yard, but we've never had any problem with them, except for the time one tore open the shed door because I hadn't done a thorough enough job cleaning fish off the grill.

The closest I came to an incident was early one morning when I was standing in the driveway in my sleeping shirt, because that's the only place we have cell service and I was trying to load Spelling Bee so I could play it while I had my coffee. I turned around and spotted a bear strolling by, about twenty feet away. He spotted me at the exact same time and we had the exact same thought: "What the fuck!" Luckily, the bear ran away, because my next thoughts were "Why the fuck did I lock the car?" and "Why the fuck did I not put on shoes before I left the house?"

A friend in Asheville is having hurrincane damage repaired to his house. The guys replacing some sliding glass doors went on a lunch break. Leaving said doors wide open. They came back to find a bear relaxing in the recliner 😮 The bear stretched, got up and ambled out the doors 🤣 No damage done to property, humans or the bear.

My daughter is about to visit Chicago for the first time. I told her take a coat but it’s looking nice.

The weather was quite lovely in Chicago over the past weekend.  At least it looked that way out the windows of the convention center.

Let me see how delicately I can tread here. Obsessed with Hinds (sorry) I enjoy their closing cover, “Davy Crockett,” a song by the English group Thee Headcoats. The chorus, no one could doubt, is borrowed from The Ramones.

Gabba Gabba Hey.

Some of us know, as The Ramones certainly did, that they were borrowing in turn from a 1932 movie in which the chant is “Gooba gabba, gooba gabba…”

I saw that movie as a kid and was startled and puzzled. But I always remembered that scene (and bored my Ramones fans friends with it). It’s on YouTube, easy to find.

Listening to Hinds playing “Davy Crockett” on YouTube and now live sent me back to the clip.

It has resonance today the director could not have imagined. Resonance more profound day by day.

Good news: the movie has a great ending. 🤞

Birria tacos from a food truck on 6th, betw. 52nd and 53rd. Can't say they did the trick for good, but they did cheer me up briefly.

Chambers offers carefully selected mixed cases from time to time, and my current one is also going to play a big role today in trying to bring good cheer.
