First of all, the weather is a bit cooler. I had decided about a month ago that I really ought to turn on the new oven at the new house to make sure it worked before I got moved and wanted to use it. As soon as I turned it on, smoke started pouring out. I freaked and immediately shut if off. I looked on the Samsung website and they say it is perfectly normal, as there are residues from manufacturing. So, they say to open all windows/doors, run fans and turn the oven on at at least 400F and run for an hour. This is the first day since that it has been cool enough to do that, so I'll go see what happens and try to burn the crud off.

Meanwhile, back at the old house, I discovered a few days ago that I had significant water leaking in the finished part of the basement. I called my favorite plumber. He spent about 2 1/2 hours on Thursday and couldn't find the leak, then yesterday he was here for about 3 1/2 hours. He did find it--a cracked drain pipe. Unfortunately, he had to cut 2 large holes in the drywall--one is about 2'x3' and the other about 3'x4' as well as a very small one under the bathroom sink. The leak is fixed but I have a ton of cleaning to do and need to find someone to replace drywall. Now, you might wonder why this is something to be cheerful about. My dear plumber only charged me $425 including all the parts he had to go get. He has been a lifesaver for me! I've had him at the new place several times. I told someone recently that I see him almost more than anyone else and I figure I should invite him for family dinners at this point. My older sister tells me I should "court" him. Ha ha ha!

The bank I used since moving here from SoCal was a small local bank that was just wonderful. This summer, it was purchased by another small regional bank and has just stunk ever since. I opened a new account at a different bank a couple of months or so ago, but have had to keep the other going while waiting for SSA to change over the direct deposit. That change was supposed to happen in October.

I was going to complain because I logged in this morning to see that my SSA payment went into the old bank. Then I realized that I should be thankful that I got paid at all given the state of the nation. (Checked with SSA and see they have the bank change slated to be effective in 2 days. <rolling eyes>)

I gathered the necessary courage to go see my ex's band play The Cutting Room. We haven't spoken in about ten years (we broke up in 1994), and I wasn't sure how he would react. But he was thrilled to see me, and we ended up hanging out for a couple of hours, catching up. Of course, since we're old, we mostly talked about our respective surgeries and who we know that's dead.

I'm saying cheerful, but it is bittersweet. The auction folks came and picked up my militaria and related collections yesterday. It seems so empty. I had such fun collecting over the years--all the vets and families I met, dealers, fellow collectors. Had a ton of fun. I really enjoyed them. But I do feel lighter.

One story...

I've had a full mannequin dressed in a WWI uniform in my house for about 30 years now. This particular mannequin had a very pretty face so I called him Klinger.

One time in California, I had a police officer at my house to file a report on behalf of 3rd Bn 5th Marines (my adopted guys). He walked in and saw Klinger standing by the window and did a double take. He said it was an excellent burglar deterrent because from outside it just looked like a big guy standing there. So, Klinger took up residence here in Liberty when we moved--by the window.

Klinger is now gone. At least for now, he'll be residing in Cape Girardeau, MO. Have fun, Klinger--thanks for your protection!!

Minutes away and everyone is calling it already.

Dick Van Dyke, happy 100th birthday 🎂

From being a child, watching reruns of the Dick Van Dyke show on British TV (and having premature thoughts about Mary Tyler Moore) through Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to realizing what a really good guy he has been. Will post the obvious clip but hopefully more in days to come.

Wonderful video! Great that he’s in extraordinarily fine shape!

TCM is doing a birthday tribute today from noon to 8 p.m.: “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Mary Poppins,” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

Reruns of ”Diagnosis: Murder,” the t.v. series in which he stars as a medical doctor who solves crimes together with his son, a police detective, played by his real son, Barry Van Dyke, are still shown regularly on one of the Hallmark channels.

The "American Masters" episode that ran on PBS last night featured him as well.

Thanks for posting that! I didn’t see it last night. However, it is streaming on the PBS site, so I’ll watch it on my iPad.
