The Flon
A quick few days in late October. We have Sunday and Monday in New Orleans after a Saturday in Lafayette and Avery Island. Wanted to try the dining room in Saint Germain but that is only Thursday-Saturday. Still will go by for wine and small plates. It's Ms. Flon's birthday so she gets to choose Sunday's dinner and that will be at Compere Lapin. Not my first choice but it looks decent (wine list isn't bad either) and I remember Nina from when she was on Top Chef and she seemed to know what she was doing. For Monday I am lobbying for La Petite Grocery. Also going to do a lunch at Tan Dinh Does anyone have experience at any of these places? We are staying at Maison de la Luz which is a boutique spinoff of The Ace Hotel. Looking forward to revisiting. Been too long. Feels strange to not have Cochon as a priority but our last visit there was not impressive and now that Mekelburg's has superior roasted oysters, we don't need to return. Cochon Butcher was great last time but it's not a priority. Would still like to squeeze it in. Any new cocktail places worth trying? Bar Marilou is connected to our hotel and I'd like to try Jewel of the South.
Evelyn
You might consider Nina’s other restaurant, Bywater American Bistro. I love them both. But have come to prefer BAB over Compere Lapin. Jewel of the South had only been open about 2 weeks when I went. The cocktail list was extremely limited. And some of the dishes we tried needed work. I will be in NOLA next week. And likely will stop in for a retest. You might also consider Hannah’s other spot, Manolito. He did a lot of research in Cuba. And he has some lovely rums you won’t find anywhere else. I heartily endorse La Petite Grocery. If you like raw oysters, be sure to hit the happy hour at Seaworthy, which is attached to the Ace. I went to Bar Marilou for friends and family. It has the bones to be a very good spot. May try it again while I’m there depending on how things go. I also recommend a cocktail from The Elysian Bar (get there early and snag a seat in the courtyard) at the Hotel Peter Paul...and food from Alex Harrell who had Angeline in the FQ. The hotel is a repurposed Catholic Church, rectory and convent. Some pretty woodwork in the bar. Will add some more thoughts after next week...
The Flon
If you like raw oysters, be sure to hit the happy hour at Seaworthy, which is attached to the Ace. Our hotel offers priority seating here and at Bar Marilou so they are on the agenda! Hotel Peter Paul was my second choice for this trip. It also would have put us a 7 minute walk from Mimi's on the Marigny which is my favorite bar in the city. Has the city gone non-smoking indoors? And is it followed? This would be a HUGE help for Ms. Flon in general. Thanks so much for your insight.
Evelyn
Been smoke free for about 4 years. I am not sure if the casino at Harrah’s is an exception. Not some place I go....

Wilfrid
Need a restaurant recommendation for Lafayette? 😊
Wilfrid
I was just re-reading my review of Bywater from last year (overall enjoyable, with all my predictable quibbles). What I’d forgotten, the cheese plate came with a fish knife.

Wilfrid
I’ve mentioned it before: Prejean’s. I’ve been twice; it’s a big, bustling place, but they have an encyclopedic Cajun menu. Although I don’t see it on the online menu, I know I’ve had very good game there too. https://www.prejeans.com/ ETA: Yes, elk, venison and buffalo. (If you want to eat crab messily and watch zydeco dancing, there’s Randol’s too). https://www.pinkpignyc.com/at_the_sign_of_the_pink_p/2007/08/new-orleans-ant.html
Wilfrid
Let’s name drop: my first dinner at Prejean’s was with Beth Littleford and Rob Fox when they were working on the Daily Show. A lot of laughing. I wonder what would have happened had I kept in touch with them? Road not taken...
mongo_jones
A quick few days in late October. coincidentally, mrs. jones and i may also get away to new orleans* for a long weekend in late october. thinking compere lapin, coquette and commander's palace for dinner. will look for evelyn's updated recs. *on the whole we'd rather go back to montreal but tickets to new orleans are less than half the price from minneapolis. Funny you mention Compère Lapin and Coquette. Had a light lunch at CP yesterday. Still excellent. Also, dinner at Coquette last night, which is clicking on all cylinders. I was a little nervous as they are close to opening their new “neighborhood” spot. And usually things seem to be less focused. Not this time. More to come next week. Got some new ones to throw in the mix
