Les Trois Chevaux is Angie Mar's follow-up to The Beatrice Inn, located in the surprisingly small space on the corner of West 12th & West 4th, next door to where The Beatrice was. As is well known, it's her stab at classic French -- although a few Japanese inflections creep in (especially on the cocktail list) (which I guess is pretty classic French these days). Of course I had to go just about as soon as it opened. I wanted to help fund Angie's parking tickets. But, really, this is food I just love -- and I just loved it. High Street on Hudson is a newish restaurant on the corner of Hudson and Horatio that mainly gets love for its breakfasts and lunches, based on its reputedly superb baked goods and cereals. Their dinner -- also heavy on the grains (this may be the least Celiac-friendly restaurant I've ever seen) -- has been less rapturously received. But without making any claims that this is one of the great restaurants in New York, I quite enjoyed it. You can't talk about this place without talking about its very sad backstory. This is the new rustic Italian place opened on Grove Street (right off Seventh Ave.) in the West Village by Rita Sodi and Jody Williams, whom we now all know (if we didn't know before -- as I didn't) are a couple. It marks Chef Williams's return to Italian, after her French detour at Buvette. It marks Chef Sodi's venturing beyond Tuscany, the region whose food she serves at I Sodi. I went opening night (Monday). I admit that's stupid. The service was almost touchingly discombobulated. But everyone was so sweet about everything.
