I finally bought some baking powder so I finally made pancakes for breakfast on Sunday. I always end up with more pancakes than I can eat because I cannot face a stack of pancakes.

So for supper last night I made a kind of ersatz piccadillo and served it over a remaining pancake (the last one was consumed this morning with a duck egg over easy).

Mrs. P made crispy deep fried soft shell crabs with a refreshing corn and avocado salad, as well as homemade guacamole and chips. It all went great with an excellent Shiraz.

The local guy I bought halibut from a couple of months ago went out fishing yesterday and caught a bunch of lingcod.  A 9-pound whole fish would have been too much for us to handle, so he gut and fileted it, separating out the bellies, and also saved us the head and collars.  The latter will be stock, the bellies will probably be smoked, and the filets will be several weeks' worth of dinners, including tonight's.  N is planning to broil one of the filets in lemon-butter-caper sauce, with rice pilaf on the side.

I got a new 10 lb. shipment of rice from The Rice Factory. 2 varieties, both milled the day they are shipped and the day before I get them. This stuff is great.

Out came the trusty donabe. Chicken ginger rice (with a few mushrooms thrown in) from Toiro Kitchen. Excellent.

Mrs. P made me Cajun dry rubbed country ribs with roasted mini peppers and Zapp’s chips, and Cajun dry rubbed shrimp salad with mini peppers and various fruits for herself. It all went great with an excellent Shiraz.

  • Roasted Japanese eggplant and red onion dip
  • Carrots with Moroccan spices, including berbere and harissa
  • RG red lentil hummus
  • More summer squash confit

Because I'm getting a little squirrelly, I read this as "turned our garden into a maze," and was like, oh, that's a nice idea.

Spouse decided to make fried chicken for dinner on Friday night. So I made a potato salad dressed with a dijon vinaigrette in addition to corn. Fun summer food.

Believe me, it already is.  Or at least an obstacle course--I've tripped several times now.
