Sneakeater
Wait that's my point. I'm totally NOT saying you're drinking shit wine now. Obvs you aren't.
Sneakeater
As far as recommendations go, read my "The Rest of Us" posts. When I open an expensive bottle, I say so.
Sneakeater
(OK, actually, checking, I don't always say so.)
Sneakeater
But if you want my advice on getting good inexpensive wine, here's what I'll tell you. It's gonna sound snobby, but it isn't -- cuz my bottom line is, you don't have to spend upwards of $20 a bottle. My advice is, DON'T go to outlets like Trader Joe's. Go to a real wine shop. Tell them you don't want to spend more than, say, $17 a bottle. You'd be shocked at how cooperative, even supportive, they'd be. And they'd show you to really good stuff. Sneakeater
Here are two inexpensive faves off the top of my head (but PLEASE understand there are literally zillions more): Chåteau Turcaud entry-level Bordeaux Blanc Viñedas y Bodegas Ponce Buena Pinta
Sneakeater
Ampeleia Unlitro (it's like $24, but it's a liter rather than 750 ml)
Sneakeater
Domaine Dupasquier La Gourmandise (oh God oh God oh God I love this wine)

If I can't find them, I'm gonna bother you again. Also note that Total Wine doesn't deliver to Manhattan, so that's not an option. And for the record, I do go into September Wine and Vin Vero and Chambers St. Wine and (most often) People's Wine and ask for recommendations. Sometimes it even works. But People's does not have a single wine under $20, unless they're lying to me. For the other record, Trader Joe's Wine closed, because the employees started making noises about unionizing. small h
And now! Actual supper. Three kinds of oysters from Aquabest, Widow something and Pink something and probably Sweet Petite's, 'cause I always get those. And Maine uni. I tried a new uni-opening method, and it worked like gangbusters. Look at this handsome devil! Not much meat on him, but what there was, was cherce. Spinach and feta, as per my roommate's request, and why not.

(Re Trader Joe’s: please believe me that I’m at least as much of a Commie as you, as the next few months will probably show—but ask yourself why you were patronizing such a Temple Of Capitalism to begin with.) Try Discovery Wines on Ave B, at 2nd ST. I haven't been in a minute, but always found intriguing and affordable bottles with a speciality in small bottlings and natural wines. https://www.discoverywines.com/valuewines
joethefoodie
I like ordering by the case, because then you get around 10% discount and free delivery (from Chambers St., Astor, et al.).
