Crowd pleaser -- bratkartoffeln, chicken schnitzel (fried in half oil half clarified butter) and a salad made with rosa del Veneto radicchio, walnuts and gorgonzola dolce. Dressed with white balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I spent years not knowing what to do with the white stuff but for chicories it's great. Highlight? The salad was such a pretty color the miniB's actually ate it (plain).

Working my way through some Indian recipes from a not very good book - an experiment in seeing what works and what doesn't. The night before last I turned my kitchen into a post-hurricane site with a

Ta. I must give this a try.

Thank you thank you. But doesn't everyone look better wearing a bath mat?

I have a lot of recipes lounging around on my laptop, some of which I make on the regular, and others that I can’t quite remember why I saved in the first place. Sometimes I dig one of those out and decide to give it a go. This is steamed fish in egg sauce, which is just what it sounds like. Cod, hard boiled egg, butter, sour cream. It is a weird-ass recipe and I wouldn’t call it good, exactly. But I’m glad I made it, just to see.

I did a trek through Chinatown to buy fancy cookies from Kuih Cafe for Lunar New Year ($26/six, 40:00 on line, still kind of worth it). And fish balls and such for a big bowl of soup. Plus fresh tofu from Fong On.

Here are the fancy cookies. You can tell they're fancy because they come in a little jar with a sticker on top.

They're also really good. Very flaky, with a pineapple filling, which - if the sign in the bakery is to be believed - is lucky to eat on New Year's, 'cause pineapples symbolize prosperity.

Have you been to Lady Wong for their traditional kuih?

Friends who have traveled fairly extensively in SE Asia say some of their stuff is as good as they recently had in Penang.

The owners have actually asked him if he could grow pandan for them, as they want stuff that is super fresh.

Pizza night last night. First ones in a year or so, needs a little work on the crust. This is Lahey's no-knead pizza dough, but I probably let it bulk ferment a little too long, and then it spent a day or two in the fridge, which sours it up a little more than I like.

Made 3 though, and we ate them all.

With the simple salad I'm currently obsessed with...

(That's a shot from a restaurant we had lunch at in Florence; last night mine looked exactly the same).

No, but I'm aware of it. At a group brunch at Urban Hawker a few months ago, some of us bought a few cakes from Lady Wong, but I was too not hungry by that time to try them. I'm not usually interested in sweets at all, but I do fall victim to hype, which is what happened yesterday.

I haven't tried it either, but I'm intrigued.  And I guess there is some savory stuff too.
