Barkley L. Hendricks

With the Henry Taylor show closing at the Whitney, here comes Barkley Hendricks at the Frick, another 20th century Black artist that had passed me by (and not just me, I suspect).

Two galleries of staggering portraits, nothing more moving I thought than the (literally) iconic portrait that welcomes you to the show.

The curatorial urge to relate the paintings to the time Hendricks apparently spent at the Frick seems strained, but what do I know? The paintings are wonderful.

(For light relief, the Ingres portrait with the most impossible arm in art history is in an adjacent galley.)
