Taqueria Ramirez y Carnitas Ramirez

While I've yet to have the opportunity to try Taqueria Ramirez (it is in Greenpoint, after all), yesterday we strolled over to Avenue B and E. 3rd St. to experience Carnitas Ramirez.

A worthwhile stroll...

Barriga (pork belly), costilla (rib meat), and maciza (butt).  https://www.carnitasramirez.com/menu-explained

Great tortillas, overall deliciousness.  And sitting on overturned, empty, 5 gallon paint canisters from Home Depot is my idea of a good time!

they're both taco places that don't serve seafood or cheese and use the same corn tortillas and salsas?

I like the al pastor, nopales, and campechano tacos in greenpoint more than any of the four things I had at the EV one. both places are worth going to but I think you can have a better, more varied meal at the one in greenpoint.

I guess I should have said if you like the new one try the original.

you can also stop by enrique olivera's esse taco on the way there, where I'd stick to the steak and mushroom (and order flour tortillas).

I think I liked the nopales the best out there. The pastor and suadero were on a level with other good renditions I’ve had around town. The tripa was a bit disappointing compared to some other places. Found them a bit skimpy and lacking any texture.

Is it a destination? If I lived in Greenpoint I’d go now and then for a quick between-meals bite or light lunch. As it is now I’ve only popped in when I happened to have other business in the area.

I guess I’m saying if one was to go out there - have something else to do. (Luckily, there are plenty of good options in walking distance)

where have you had better al pastor?

I’ll say upfront I’m not an Al pastor specialist. It’ll usually be one of a number of tacos ordered and while usually good, among the less interesting to me. It’s often more like a palate cleanser between the buche and tripa. I find a narrower spectrum of difference between the high and low than I will with other cuts.

Not necessarily better, but perhaps around but same level - aforementioned Taco Mix. Assorted street carts along Roosevelt, but especially the one with the big pot of bubbling lard around 79th/80th or so. Also one of the two directly outside the station - I think it was Charly, but it might have been the other one. (Admittedly, the carts are all typically midnight-or-later eats when things inherently taste better and my memory is foggier.)

There are decent Sunset Park options. Bronco and Poblanitos are in my regular rotation. Maybe Matamoros and/or Ricos but it’s been awhile. Haven’t tried it at Rancho Grande yet but I’ve liked most things I’ve had there so far.
