Their offshoot commercial product "True Basic" was the first computer system/language I ever used. That was back in the mid-eighties, and I knew nothing about computers. I'd buy computer magazines and puzzle over terms such as RAM and ROM. True Basic was my entry into that world. Then came TeX, C, etc.

Kemeny and Kurtz were an amazing team and nice guys, as well. The idea that these things should be approachable to and accessible by the masses was pretty groundbreaking.

Me too.  It made me realize very quickly that computer programming was not going to be my career path.
