Is your world turning orange?

I have noticed that I am persistently ordering orange wines by the glass. Part of the reason is that they are now showing up on most wine lists. The rest of the reason is that I tend to like them — although a recent extensive tasting convened by the Orange Glou wine store showed just how varied a category it is.

I am usually ordering blind because I have made no study of them. But I like the Rogue Vine Jamon Jamon I drank at Lola’s so much that I tracked it down at Vino on Lex and bought a couple of bottles.

I am surely not alone in this interest.

You are not. I always include at least one bottle in my wine orders, and I am very likely to choose an orange wine when I'm out. I like them a lot. Sel Rrose (might've been the first place I had orange wine) used to have a bunch, but I see they're down to one.

My first place to see a bunch of them was the Serbian joint on Avenue C, Kafana.

I never got around to Sel Rrose and looks like the Manhattan location is gone.

I am warming to Motel Morris, not a food destination but what I have eaten is okay, but really trying to do excellent service in a pleasant environment.

Fabulous Palava 2022 from Donatus (Czech), all peach and apricot but still dry, lurking here behind a huge Toulouse sausage from Foster Sundry. Wine from Orange Glou on Broome.

I may be misremembering, but wasn't Ruffian one of the first "wine bars" to offer a selection of orange?

 I may be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure that at the now closed Delancey/Bowery location, the same person who owns Orange Glou was curating the wine list.

That might well be the first wine bar but Kafana has been around longer and I think they always had an orange selection.

I'm pretty sure Ten Bells was serving some skin contact wines (Calek for sure) even before Vladimir opened.
