Nice to be back....🙃

I went to the day session last week and saw some good matches. Even better was walking to Flushing afterwards and having a really good dinner at Juqi in the new mall on College Point Blvd and 37th Ave. Highlights were the cabbage in mustard sauce, shrimp balls, noodles and duck served a few different ways. Quite the presentation as well. Not cheap but well prepared food from Beijing.

Mitchell101: What?! you didn't stay on grounds and eat?

hollywood10: Yes, we were there for the quals & then attended Thurs (2nd Round Singles, 1st Round Doubles) & Sat (3rd Round Singles, various Doubles, some Jrs.).  Very, very crowded this year but we saw some great matches from some close vantage points.  We never set foot in Ashe, but did watch a very nice Women's Singles match in Armstrong on Thurs.  The back courts and sometimes Court 17 are the best.  The Grandstand is now hit or miss.  Charter/Spectrum's war with Disney/ESPN is pissing me off.  We bought a month of ESPN+ to see a # of matches but, as you probably know, we cant get the Ashe and Armstrong matches, since they are on ESPN3 & affected by the contract dispute.  We cant get ABC either (home of Jeopardy re-runs) but I can live with that.

I seem to be seeing many of the matches (Coco earlier this afternoon, Novak/Fritz now) via youtube tv...of course, since SNY dropped youtube TV (or vice-versa, ya never know), I can't watch the mets since the end of June.  Which actuallyt turned out to be a good thing this year...I'll drop youtube tv after football season.

Oy (I do think we once had a discussion about what "choke" means in sports. maybe last night was the definition?).

That was brutal. I thought Sabalinka was going to crush her so made a bet that the total number of games in the match would be less than 21.5 never in a million years thinking  I could win my bet with Keys winning the match. There we are at 6-0 and 5-3 serving for the win.  Of course I then needed to stay up and watch the whole match.

Ginny kept her eye on the match and told me about the 6-0 first set when it happened.  I said "wow" (or something similar).  Before we went to bed, I asked for an update and she said that Keys was up 5-3 in the second set.  I said "ok, but don't bet on it yet" & we nodded off.  The big "WOW" came next morning.  And, no, I don't agree that this is the definition of choke.  5-3 is one break and, obviously, neither of them could count on their serve not being broken at that point.  Sabalinka came up big to do it and then showed her dominance in the tie-break.  It's not like Keys lost the third set by a lot either - another tie-break, another difference in talent.  Keys just got over matched by a better player who woke up.

As an aside, sure I'd rather be up a set, but the first set score is much less relevant in tennis than in other major sports, as the scores are not cumulative across sets.   It's hard to win 2 sets in a row, but not particularly harder to do it in the second 2 sets than the first 2.  And, in the Men's majors, it's even less relevant.  It all re-sets to zero & you just have to win each game/set from an equal standing.  No catching up to do in the 7th inning, down by 6 runs.  Just win the inning.  I love tennis.
