  1. You can download a PDF of the scanned original edition from the Library of Congress for free. Those of us who attended the Abby Fisher potluck yesterday used that PDF to make the recipes.
  2. Belated Shrove Tuesday pancakes: savory ones with sauteed leeks and a poached egg for dinner and sweet ones with cinnamon sugar and lemon for dessert.
  3. Got 2 free bags of Anson Mills Carolina Gold rice at the potluck we went to yesterday!
  4. I'm attending a potluck this evening where the theme is recreating recipes from the 19th-century cookbook What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Cooking, the first attributed to an African-American author. The vagueness of 19th-century recipes being what it is, I went with ginger cake (gingerbread), because there are plenty of modern recipes that I could use for reference. It came out nice and moist, if very large, but it calls for a whole pint of molasses and I accidentally used blackstrap rather than regular molasses. I hope the attendees like the flavor!
  5. Did not know that Kurt Gutenbrunner worked at Bouley. I always enjoyed my meals at Wallsé.
  6. Too young. I'm sorry I never got to go to any of his restaurants.
  7. Straight-off-the-boat Dungeness crab for Super Bowl Sunday--go Niners!
  8. Here's 6-10: shest, syem, vochem, dyevyat, dyesyat. Let me know when you're ready for 11-20. Numbers are about all I remember from Russian class.
  9. Chicken, butternut squash, and mushroom tagine over couscous.

    Mojo Nixon

At 66. "If you don't like Mojo Nixon, then your store could use some fixin'."
  11. My mom used to get kosher veal Italian sausage from the butcher all the time.
  12. Sadly, I did. Fortunately, the station clerk had a Band-Aid and I had hand sanitizer--that was enough to do the job until I got to the office and its well-stocked first aid cabinet.
  13. An as-yet-unnamed drink a friend invented. Quafftide is a possible name. 2 oz. gin 3/4 oz. grenadine or cranberry syrup (not juice) 1/2 oz. lemon juice 1/3 oz. Licor 43 Shake and strain into a cocktail or coupe glass.
  14. Finding out that Village Cigars, Fat Cat Billiards (which was Tekk Billiards back in the late 1980s), and the GV branch of Big Gay Ice Cream have all closed.
  15. Managed to tear two items of clothing in two successive days: a pair of pants at the knee, when I fell in the BART station (they were on the way out anyway), and the lining around the sleeve of my winter coat as I stretched to close a window on the F streetcar.
  16. Me, but usually only when I'm walking around a strange city, especially when I'm outside the US. And FWIW, I buy at least one print guidebook.
  17. I think the worst of it will be gone by then.
  18. Just started watching Feud: Capote vs The Swans. I'm glad I read "La Cote Basque 1965" beforehand, both for the context and to be able to provide explanation to N. As she put it, "This is really sordid." And we've only watched one episode.
  19. Had drinks there a couple of times before the pandemic. Beautiful space.
