  1. My favorite elementary school story will forever and ever be when New Canaan tried to consolidate elementary schools and parents at one school objected to being mixed in with dual income families. Maplewood one of the more "progressive" towns out here banned Halloween this year btw.
  2. I was under the impression when she said "small ivy league" she meant "little ivy" especially given the description.
  3. I mean its fine. All too sweet, but in the canon of fast food not hideous.
  4. I remember huge media around. Is Fuku successful? I wonder if the Chick-fil-A rollout in the Northeast has hurt that?
  5. this is just so perfectly dickish "we're the best so obviously you don't need to see us to make us your first choice"
  6. Last I heard nixtamal had moved the entire wholesale tortilla business to NJ and it seemed like split the taqueria off as a separate entity.
  7. my neighbor grows goats on their hobby farm. It was interesting to me to learn that they are almost entirely sold for Ramadan.
  8. hes not complaining that an appetizer is 28 dollars, he's complaining that two shrimp are 28 dollars. He's happy to recommend a 39 dollar burger. His critique isn't one of general affordability, its one of value for money - and its clear he doesn't understand ingredient costs.
  9. one wonders what the GM on the 39 dollar minetta burger looks like relative to the infamous 28 dollar shrimp
  10. I mean I can think of good reasons not to want to go to stuy. It doesn't sound like a particularly fun place to go to school. nyc hs process sounds horrible. we're at a "do we move the kids to the prepostrous day school because we're sort of unhappy with the public school" process right now for middle school next year - the two good secular day schools have a 6th grade entry. I feel very conflicted. I feel like good outcomes are actually better at the local A- public high and middle, but average outcomes are worse. So you are asking yourself do I think my kid can be in the top five of his class at the public high school or not - and that's just a crazy think to try to underwrite in a 5th grader. And they you layer in I've met some incredible kids at the day school but I've also met some kids who seem very very entitled. Its not obvious
  11. I can't believe that ridiculousness just did a funding round.
  12. I thought the whole story with resy was that they were basically giving the service away? like it was a subsidy from Amex to restos
  13. ::pats head:: oh you are. of course you are.
  14. I had a friend who was a Genius Hunter for the MacArthur Foundation - i'd send him your way but he's dead. (incredible story about the guy - I was travelling with him in central asia and I liked him, but he would always tell me these ridiculous sounding stories about famous people he used to hang out with. I just ignored because ya'know people are weird. Then he died and I got an email from Lewis Lapham inviting me to a remembrance thing for him.)
  15. third grader already agitating for makeup and a phone.
  16. its coming! a boy stole beer from the Country Club snack bar at my son's end of 4th grade party.
  17. We have a miele and an asko and the contest isnt close. The miele is so much better.
  18. I would just do Girona unless seeing the Dali museum is really important to you. Girona is a really nice day trip from BCN. Bummer we lost the back threads here.
  19. Sneaks gonna be the coatcheck girl!
  20. I assume you'll be responding to the too much fish and middle eatern spice demerits with pecan crusted airline chicken and a nice usda choice strip as permanent menu items?
  21. They do. Just maybe not to the times.
  22. This is like the scene in the blues brothers where they compare various dishes in different state prisons. I'll add for the record the pepper steak in United Polaris might be worse than the pepper steak in Joliet. I had the flight attendant apologize to me as he handed me my plate. I fly international business class a bunch and really mostly care about hard product. Can I sleep in your lie flat, do you have an arrival lounge I can shower in, and can you get me through security quickly. Flying to Europe I try not to eat on plane - especially the flight over. Asia a different story and the local carriers always much better than US carriers but still not actually good. I had an utterly hideous experience on BA yesterday. They tried to unload a 787 from a remote stand with one bus. I was in Row 22 (which is J on that flight l, the premium loads are so high) and it took me 30 minutes to get off the bus.
