small h
Mostly low-mid range, seafood & vegetarian. As mentioned on another thread, we've been to Oahu before and enjoyed House Without A Key, the now defunct Pineapple Room, shrimp trucks and noodle shops. In particular, I'd love to find some fish that's hard to get on the East Coast.
Evelyn
MW A little pricier than you asked for. But worth it. The owners (Michelle and Wade) were trained, and worked for Alan Wong for all their careers until he retired. Yanagi Sushi Sushi ii You'll need reservations. All get very busy. MitchW
Do you follow or know of Kathy's Blog...https://onolicioushawaii.com/about/ An old friend who actually came to a few of our dinner clubs...like 15 years ago. https://www.instagram.com/onolicioushawaii/
small h
Thanks to you both! @MitchW, I think you gave me that link on another thread, but thanks for the reminder. @Evelyn I looked at the MW menu when you mentioned it earlier and got the vapors from the prices. Then I looked at the restaurant prices at our hotel, and it suddenly doesn't seem so bad 🤣.
Evelyn
Hawaii has gotten very pricy. I go a couple of times a year. And have done that for many years. The restaurant prices in general jumped substantially with all the COVID revenge travel. I should add Zippy's to the list. It's a favorite of locals. Pricing is gentle. Food is solid. Lots of menu options. Atmosphere casual. And they are all over the island. They just opened their first one on the mainland here in Las Vegas. Also, lots of fiid trucks around Waikaki and near University of Hawaii. And, if you have a sweet tooth- Leonard's for malasadas.
small h
Ah, I think we had breakfast at a Ziggy's on our last trip - the menu looks familiar. Restaurant prices shot up post-pandemic, and I know Hawaii's generally an expensive place. But hoo, boy! I didn't expect it to be SO expensive. Thanks, all! Sneakeater
I'm making Kathy's eggplant dish in a few days!
hollywood
If you want to splurge, Azure in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (aka the Pink Palace) has fine food. https://www.azurewaikiki.com/ Roy's a couple of blocks away has excellent seafood at a lesser price. It is a favorite of the locals. And of mine. Michelle's desserts are excellent. And Wade's savory dishes are dangerous. I always order more than I should because I want to try them. But somehow I finish everything. And am glad my glutton personality came out 😄. Be aware, the portions (to me) are large.
small h
I am probably sticking to appetizers. It's just me. The mister has a work thing.

Hey, that was me.🤨. And Kathy told me that she’s now joined HO so maybe this will spark some Hawaii posts there as well. Edited August 15, 2024 by Steve R. So far we have had sashimi and poke from Maguro Brothers (good, but not substantially different than what you’d get at home, except for the poke, which was way better) and a breakfast sandwich and “dirty horchata” (need to have this every day) from a food truck called Munch and Brunch. Also stocked the mini fridge with can cocktails from ABC, and I would like ABC to expand to NYC.
hollywood
Apparently ABC stands for Aloha Brings Cash.
