cinghiale Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 Hulking out (Marvel) vs Hulking up (WWE). Always stuff to learn: “Hulking up” is when someone suddenly comes back from the brink of defeat with a wildly improbable—and superficially ridiculous—spurt of superhuman strength. “Hulking up” was one of Hogan’s signature gimmicks. cinghiale Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 From one of the newsletters I subscribe to: My favorite Hulk Hogan story comes from 1994. The federal government was prosecuting WWE owner Vince McMahon for allegedly peddling steroids to his employees. The prosecutors approached Hogan and informed him that, as a key player in the WWE, he was also a target in the investigation. They wanted to flip him and get him to testify against McMahon. At the time, McMahon and Hogan had fallen out. Hogan had left the WWE for a rival company and there was bad blood between the two men. Realbad blood; not kayfabe. Here’s Hogan describing the situation: After I left the WWF, the government wanted their star witness. I was told that if I didn’t say what they wanted to hear, the target of the investigation would be directed to me. . . . I was granted immunity and I said, “Well, cool. I got it. I know what I’m going to say.”⁴ What Hogan said—under oath—was that McMahon was innocent and had never done any of the things he was charged with. The prosecutors lost their minds. They had been sandbagged by their star witness; a guy to whom they had granted immunity. Hogan later explained his actions this way: One of the last times I talked to Vince . . . one of the last things I said to him [was] “Brother, we go all the way up together and we go all the way down together. Don’t forget that.”⁵ Asked whether or not the government knew what he was about to do, Hogan replied, No, I wouldn’t tell them. I just said, “I’ll say whatever you guys need me to say.” I just told them what they wanted to hear at the time. That’s kayfabe. Quote
