NYC Burgers

I drifted away from trying burgers around town as I drifted away from eating bread five years ago.

It’s clear that we now have a lot of independent burger vendors. In the last week or so I have walked by Hamburger America, Gotham Burger, Burger By Day and doubtless others I have forgotten. I have the impession that this trend leans heavily toward smash burgers. Am I right? Are there, nevertheless, places worth trying?

I haven't tried any of them, but I think you're guess is spot on. But - I don't eat many burgers, in general.

I agree that it’s mostly smash burgers.

the only one you mention that I’ve tried is hamburger america, which I didn’t like very much, it was clearly worse than the stuff he was selling at farrel’s so maybe it’s better now.

the park slope location of seventh street burger is pretty good. it’s worth trying if they have a location convenient to you.

I guess another reason I lost track of the scene is that I’ve lived two minutes from Harlem Public and At the Wallace for over two years, so I don’t really need to travel for a good burger.

There are so many smashburgers right now and some are pretty indistinguishable from each other. I have always been amazed by the cult of George Motz but he is certainly a passionate and likeable ambassador of burger. Harlem Shake, 7th Street Burger, 8 Bit Burger, Hamburger America, Gotham Burger Social Club,  it all makes me crave PJ Clarke's.

I think the trend leans heavily towards managing to sell something for under $10

At The Wallace has terrific food all around. Still bummed they dropped the fried cheese curds. Also, after years in the wilderness during which Harlem Shake was serving some truly substandard food they have had a great burger and hot dog again within the past six months. I think they made some much needed adjustments.

Interesting news about Harlem Shake. I tried to like it when I had the place like four blocks away, but those burgers were bone dry and flavorless. Looks like still the same ownership.
