Steve R. Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 It seems that we’re going to need lunch/dinner recommendations in Dublin during October. We’re going to be traveling around Ireland/N.Ireland for 2+ weeks but will be in Dublin for 2 nights in the beginning of the trip, then at least 2 more nights at the end. Since we no longer have access to the old MF postings, I cant get to the many posts Blondie made years ago. Oh, well. As you all know, we mostly like smaller, friendly places where the food is all about good ingredients, solid cooking & non fussy presentation, but we're open to any place that is remembered fondly by you all. Additionally, it seems we may need recommendations for a dinner in Limerick, one in Cork and maybe 2 in Belfast as well. Thanks in advance. Quote

Wilfrid Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 I went to Dublin once. I think we had lunch in a dining room at a church, but I can't remember why or which one. I had shepherd's pie. 1 Quote

Steve R. Posted February 7, 2024 Author Posted February 7, 2024 Thanks... much appreciated. Bastible looks great & I'll start looking at the others & your blog. I forgot that you spent a bit of time there. Any idea where I can get a good butter chicken? 😋 Quote
hollywood Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 The horseshoe bar at the Shelbourne Hotel is good for cocktails and you never know who might drop by. Quote
MitchW Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Fish Shop was excellent. We also had a fine meal (tonight) at UNO Mas. Quote
Steve R. Posted October 2, 2024 Author Posted October 2, 2024 Thanks. Leaving Fri with first 4 nights in Dublin. Quote
plattetude Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 +1 on Fish Shop. And a fine pub in the same neighborhood, The Cobblestone, with nightly trad Irish music. Brother Hubbard (two locations, one north of the Liffey, the other south) does a fine breakfast. If you'd want to visit the James Joyce Centre (small but charming), right around the corner is a sandwich shop, 147 Deli, that is phenomenal (takeaway only). 2 Quote

Steve R. Posted January 7, 2025 Author Posted January 7, 2025 Since this thread has moved back to the top, I figure that I should at least mention where we wound up eating during our 6 Dublin nights in October. The best, by far, was Dax (23 Pembroke St Upper, Dublin 2: https://www.dax.ie) a 92euro pre fixe 3 course dinner with choices on each course. The owner/chef, Graham Neville, worked the room, speaking with each table and the dishes we had were excellent. Luckily, there were some Dubliners visiting Brooklyn this past summer who wound up playing tennis at my club and told us about it. Less luckily (but still fine), they also mentioned Peploe, a similarly upscale Italian place that we thought ordinary (but, again, still fine). Our hotel recommended another mid-range (approx 200euro all in for the 2 of us) place called Sole Seafood & Grill (18-19 William St S, Dublin 2) that was an excellent (yes, you guessed it) fish/seafood place we enjoyed. And, some posters on HO recommended The Winding Stair (40 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1) where we very much enjoyed our dinner. More of an informal West Village type place, we had squash soups (very good), Ginny had duck w/beets (okay+) & I had smoked haddock in milk w/onions (excellent). Our other 2 meals were had at an above average pub called Sheehans (17 Chatham St, Dublin 2), where we loved the Seafood Chowder, Beef and Guinness Pies & Irish Lamb Stews we consumed. and at Davy Byrnes (21 Duke St, Dublin 2) a famous old pub where the food was surprisingly good considering that we just went there to say we'd been. Two weeks of dinners in cities other than Dublin had some highlights as well, but I'll leave that alone unless anyone is really interested. You know where to find me. 1 Quote
Wilfrid Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 These reports are always valuable but I don't know if I'll be there again. My close friends left Ireland so I'd need a reason. But you did remind me of the creamy baked haddock at Scales in Portland, such a dish from my childhood. Quote
mongo Posted January 8, 2025 Posted January 8, 2025 you certainly made good use of my recommendations. Quote
Steve R. Posted January 8, 2025 Author Posted January 8, 2025 🫢 (you never gave me that butter chicken recommendation.) Quote
