StephanieL
The blurb in this week's Talk of the Town about the newspaper thieves reminded me of the time when I lived in Astoria and the New York Times deliveries regularly got stolen from my building's lobby (my own paper included). A number of fortuitous early-morning spottings, including the blue wrappers littered on the ground a block away (address labels intact), led me to discover that someone was taking the papers and selling them to at least one local bodega, where they were stashed in a cubby next to the newspaper shelves. The Times didn't seem too interested in my findings. I had to cancel my delivery and buy the paper at of all places a 7-Eleven that had just come into the neighborhood. I figured they probably wouldn't be trafficking in stolen newspapers. Edited August 23 by StephanieL
small h
The funniest joke ever is "So a horse walks into a bar, and the bartender says 'Why the long face?'" Sneakeater
The funniest joke in the world is, “a priest, a rabbi, a nun, a blonde, and a duck walk into a bar; the bartender says, ‘is this some kind of joke?’”
cinghiale
A peanut butter sandwich walks into a bar, and the bartender says, “I’m sorry, we don’t serve food here.”
Wilfrid
That comedy archive issue had some gems. I hadn't previously seen Art Spiegelman's tribute to Peanuts. Moving and truly funny.

I very much enjoyed the issue, especially the piece about Richard Pryor, undoubtedly the greatest stand-up I ever got to see live. And if you’ve never listened to the albums, or seen the movies…especially recommend Live in Concert and Live on the Sunset Strip.

July, 1983 And this is what happened to the Circle Star: The building caught fire on April 18, 1997, damaging much of the backstage area, though by this time plans had already been made for its demolition. The theater was ultimately demolished to make way for the Circle Star Center, a complex containing two four-story office buildings and a small hotel.[5] Since 2015 or 2014 Softbank owns the buildings and uses them as offices. The hotel is now an Extended Stay America.[citation needed]

Wilfrid
A section in Goings On I haven’t seen before (digital edition): Bar Tab. We are to have bar reviews? How will the candidates be selected? The first, Carousel on Wyckoff, doesn’t appeal to me and not to the reviewer either (mostly).
Wilfrid
Jiayang Fan writes about a two hour wait to get into Martinys; might be more useful for the reader to mention that it takes reservations and you should make one.

Wilfrid
I would bet on the reader knowing that. What the reader can't tell from that piece is that there's a reservations system and you should use it.
Wilfrid
Bar Tab. Being “a little bit 54 Below, a little bit Marie’s Crisis” sounds like being a little bit Jean-Georges, a little bit Katz’s.
Sneakeater
I was about to post a semi-howler regarding Eric Adams from a few weeks ago -- only to note that it was corrected the last day or so. The New Yorker's legendary fact-checking continues -- only retrospectively. Edited October 8 by Sneakeater
Wilfrid
I was hesitant about reading the excerpts from Navalny's prison diaries as I expected them to be depressing. Of course they are, it's a horrific situation, but he manages to make a remarkable number of very good jokes.
Orik
I read one of his letters to Anatoly Sharansky and appreciated the wryness but yes it was on the depressing side. The gulag was only resting, it seems.
MitchW
I kinda like Rosner's latest whatever you call it... Helen, Help Me: What If You’re Dining with a Jerk? In which Helen not only discusses what to do in the above situation (repeating my tenet: Just remember that your server is your ally), but also the Martini/olive question (like, when to eat the olive). Helen's answer: Quote Two-thirds of the way through. But you really ought to try getting your Martini with a twist. I'll add - ask for an olive on the side.
