She also seems to think Noel Kahan is well served by a comparison between his lyrics and Wallace Stevens' poetry. Are there Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird? Quote
MitchW Posted February 24, 2024 Posted February 24, 2024 I was interested in the piece, only because I hadn’t heard of Noel. Quote
Wilfrid Posted March 14, 2024 Author Posted March 14, 2024 “Yet Zendaya, an actor of tremulous, often wordless nuance…” That’s some good writing with no dumb stuff about her having a big head. Quote
Wilfrid Posted April 11, 2024 Author Posted April 11, 2024 I think everyone who finished high school knows what a Möbius strip is. Maybe those who never went to high school picked up on it too. At Okiburo, says Jiayang Fan, "the noodles are beguilingly wide Möbius strips of silk." No they're not. It would be remarkable if they were, but they're not. Just look at the pictures. Yes, they are very wide noodles. I understand the Katy Freeway in Texas is a notably wide highway. It is not a Möbius strip. As usual, I don't mean so much to beat up on the writer, who is trying to inject some fun. But do they still employ editors? Quote

mongo Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 i'm also a bit confused because the article seems premised on the novelty of the place and its food, but after reading it i have no idea what that novelty comprises. Quote
Orik Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 The noodles are so wide that even if they are orientable, trying to eat them will leave you disorientated. I recommend the author's wikipedia page. Quote
Sneakeater Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 Isn't the inapplicable word she's searching for "ouroburos"? (Seriously, maybe that's what set her off.) Quote

MitchW Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 The food issue is fully digital - is this the first year for that? Anyway, the Shteyngart piece about Martinis, is a fun read. And he only mentions his botched childhood circumcision once, though the word circumcision does make another appearance later in the piece. And from the piece, I found out where one of my favorite old-school bartenders is now tending bar. Quote
Wilfrid Posted April 26, 2024 Author Posted April 26, 2024 It is a first. But it's quite confusing. I found it by searching. Once I found it I discovered I could open it in the app. But if you go direct to the app, it's not on the scroll of digital issues. The top one there is still the wonderful cat cover on the Technology issue. Also, does this mean there won't be a new print issue Monday? Quote

Wilfrid Posted April 26, 2024 Author Posted April 26, 2024 The last print issue was a double, but it is two weeks old, so as Stephanie says there should be a new May 6 print issue. I just wondered if the digital food issue affects that. It shouldn't. Quote
