Anthony Bonner
Urbanspace is a particular chain of food courts. Midtown mon-th is pretty normal.
Sneakeater
I think, in NYC at least, people are just kind of over food courts. Look at the relative failure of Urban Hawker after a short-lived initial burst of interest.
Sneakeater
Among other things, I think it finally sank in that food courts tend not to be very pleasant places to eat.

Anthony Bonner
The midtown food courts were much more "grab and bring back to office"

I didn't mind that at all, since the ceiling is high enough that I don't feel claustrophobic. Sitting at the bar at the Grand Delancey or Essex Pearl is very nice, I think. And I was a big fan of the chef residencies at People's Wine. The only not-great option is the part of the Gouie counter that faces The Pickle Guys - I hate sitting with my back "to the room." MitchW
I only had two meals downstairs at Gouie. It is always a little depressing to me down there. (Oh wait, maybe one at People's, when they first opened). I like windows, even if the ceilings are high.

Sneakeater
Not closing, but recently changed ownership and I think there's being some turnover.

From what I’ve been told, they were really relying on it becoming a nighttime hang-out spot for people before / after a movie upstairs. Two problems with that were a) no one seemed to know where the after-hours entrance was, it was sorely lacking in signage. And b) the theater itself has been a bust. Every time I’ve seen a movie there I’ve been one of max eight people in any audience. The Tin Building seems to be doing alright. From a couple TB inside sources: most of the restaurants are doing okay. The market is failing, especially the produce & proteins on the first floor. And the non produce/proteins, like the stuff on the 2nd floor, while well-curated, is just kind of silly in my opinion. 14 hours ago, SethG said: Two problems with that were a) no one seemed to know where the after-hours entrance was, it was sorely lacking in signage To say nothing of the fact that it has been barely promoted. Anywhere. There are thousands of new residents; to think they couldn't have done a better job - unless the developers really wanted it to fail. Wilfrid
Right, I go to Tin Building if I am in that neighborhood for other reasons. Not making a special journey (as I actually do for Essex Market or specifically for Formaggio).
backyardchef
It's hard to resist seeing this in the context of the larger failure of brick and mortar retail and the continuing expansion of online niche shopping.
sweatshorts
Looks like the Clinton Hill location of Mekelburg's is closing on March 31. Tough news for the neighborhood.
