I am so preeningly pleased with myself. The new New Yorker praises the Criterion Channel and mentions two movies I had already selected and watched.

"Man's Castle," a 1933 movie with Spencer Tracy because early Spencer Tracy is always great.

"Bushman," 1971, in which a young Nigerian man's immersion in San Francisco life is violently ripped into a documentary when the actor playing the role is deported.

"Wicked" part 1.  It's 2 hours 40 minutes of movie craft.  It didn't change my life or make me eager for part 2, but it does capture $150 million worth of talent and skill.  Not as much CGI as you might anticipate.

It's visually spectacular and 40 minutes too long.

I just learned there's a new Wallace & Gromit movie, "Vengeance Most Fowl." I have bought a ticket to interrupt the tedium of New Year's Day. This must be the first since the original voice of Wallace, Peter Sallis, passed away.

"Get Millie Black" is a 5 part procedural on Max.  I've seen the intriguing first 2 episodes which feature human trafficking, murder, racism and all kinds of corruption being investigated by the Jamaican Police Force and Scotland Yard in Jamaica and London.  Juicy stuff.

Well, what do you expect? It's astonishing (and you can buy and watch on Netflix). On the one hand, vastly entertaining; on the other, how can you not wonder at the endless patience required to orchestrate huge, endless chase sequences with many characters using stop-motion photography?

It's also a parable about AI.

And worth flagging positive diversity in a movie set in a fantasy nostalgic England.

Wicked (part the first). It was a lot of fun. Might have been better in the the theater, but eh, other people. I never saw the show, and only knew one of the songs, so I came in fresh.

Watching this tonight, and very much looking forward to it.

Palm Royale on Apple TV+. Watching for the costume and set design. Enjoyed Ricky Martin, Barbara Walters did him dirty basically stealing 30 years of career development from him

A Complete Unknown, aka a lot of good things that happened to Bob Dylan, plus one thing that seemed bad at first but also turned out to be good.

The past keeps returning. The Wrong Trousers, astonishingly, was released in 1993. I just saw a kind of sequel at Lincoln Center.

Also showing there is Mike Leigh's new film, Hard Truths, which, through it's leading performer, apparently conjures memories of Secrets & Lies, 1996.

I haven't watched movies on airplanes for years, but I remember that's how I saw Secrets & Lies when it was new and I remember crying.

Guess I need a ticket to this new one.

I just finished watching season 3 of Somebody Somewhere. What a great show. Thank you to whomever it was here who suggested it when season 1 aired. Each season was a gem and it really closed in a wonderful way.

We love that show, too. Such a rare gem.
