MitchW Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 The uni we had here recently was excellent…and from Maine (I think, and hope). Quote
Simon Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 (edited) Yes! The recent uni was from Maine and, indeed, excellent. Edited October 3, 2023 by Simon Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Hmmmm. I guess I have to rethink this. I mean, I eat Maine at home. I just thought it wasn't up to Ori standards. Quote

Orik Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Maine (bafun) uni is indeed more flavorful although California (Murasaki) uni is sweeter and has those beautiful large tongues. During early summer we got it from Mendocino county as Santa Barbara water was too hot, then switched to Maine when the season opened. As with oysters, if you want to understand the primary determinant of quality, buy yourself a nice tray from a reputable vendor and try a few tongues every day. Let me know how you feel about day seven. P.s. the guys in Maine also sell uni packed in water which is absolutely the best way to do it but makes it hard to ship  Quote

Which has to be a pain in the ass and really expensive. Quote
Orik Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Not whole, although those are available too. 2 Quote

mongo Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 are the chicken tenders from california or maine? Quote

relbbaddoof Posted October 4, 2023 Posted October 4, 2023 All this talk of uni has made me hungry. I shall use all the superhero* powers at my disposal to get in there this week and eat it all. *Ori: Look for the guy who wears his red underwear on the outside. Quote

I can't imagine it's a downgrade.... You mean the sandwich shop is reopening and getting bumped up to 2 stars? Congrats! Quote
Orik Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 No I mean I assumed he's re-reviewing I Sodi to bump them up, but I guess not. Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 (edited) Clearly the rereview was cuz they moved into larger quarters, which is often the kiss of death for cute tiny restaurants. Edited October 6, 2023 by Sneakeater Quote
Wilfrid Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 I can't recall if I went to the original. The food reads very well, but would I fight for a reservation? Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 Once, when I had a date, I was magically able to get a reservation there. It had never happened before nor has it happened since. My attempts to walk in were of course laughable. Quote
Sneakeater Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 And the bigger new place has a smaller bar! Quote

Simon Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Don't sleep on the dry-aged duck breast with fermented watermelon(?) sauce. Also, the latest uni dish -- with cured bluefin tuna and pig ears (or alternatively, feet) -- may be the most delightful bite I've had here so far. 1 Quote
mongo Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 we had a fantastic dinner at foxface on saturday. i hope to write it up in some detail in the next week or so on the blog but in the meantime you can look at the pictures on my insta. it was also great to chat with ori and sivan during the meal. and we also met simon and the flon who were at the counter as well. 1 Quote

When I eat there I often wonder which luminaries are at the counter. Would it cost you so much to reveal yourselves to me? @MitchW could spit in my drink, or @sneakeater could threaten to horsewhip me on the steps of my club (Planet Fitness, in case anybody wants to know). But, no, everybody is unfailingly polite and studiously well behaved, including the central European actor who began the interaction by telling me that she was "kind of a big deal in my country". 1 Quote
