hollywood10 Posted November 19, 2023 Author Posted November 19, 2023 Alexander Payne's "The Holdovers" is a bittersweet holiday dramedy. Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa all perform flawlessly. There are echoes of other old teacher films but this one can stand on its own. Quote
Wilfrid Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 I enjoyed it and especially the performances of Randolph and Giamatti; but I admit I struggled with the bridge between hilarious comedy and utter tragedy. Quote
splinky Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Crashing Eid on Netflix. It's a rom com but so much more. It also has all the things and addresses racism, feminism, toxic masculinity, divorce, changing culture and norms, different forms of abuse - family, domestic, family relationships, toxic family members, Quote

bloviatrix Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Season 2 of Julia on HBO, which they've been dropping with absolutely no fanfare. Delightful. Although I'm doubtful of the veracity. Quote

splinky Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 High on the Hog season 2 on Netflix this is a truly deep dive into the history of america 1 Quote
splinky Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 "aka Mr Chow" such an interesting man. i love the thing where he gives the opening shots of great films. he and his sister the actress Tsai Chin totally have "IT" whatever IT actually is, she was also a Bond Girl. Quote
small h Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The first episode was a lot of fun! And a little confusing for me - it jumps back and forth through time, and look, it's John Goodman! and then it's like he was never there at all. Quote
hollywood10 Posted December 6, 2023 Author Posted December 6, 2023 Maestro. Going beyond the vaguely similar "Tar" the film raises the question how did Bernstein do so much and so many for so long, and live to tell about it. Entertaining for sure. Quote
splinky Posted December 25, 2023 Posted December 25, 2023 Hate watching the second season of The Gilded Age. Quote

If the film is at all accurate, he was a prodigious smoker and maybe had some coke as well all while maintaining liaisons with various men and women. Quote
Sneakeater Posted December 25, 2023 Posted December 25, 2023 You know as well as I do that 72 is a baby. Cancer doesn't count. Quote
hollywood10 Posted January 7, 2024 Author Posted January 7, 2024 (edited) A film that works you over but is well worth it is "Anatomy of a Fall" from France. You might quibble with courtroom scenes that emphasize dramatic revelations over compliance with rules of procedure and evidence but it's all done with amazing skill. Available in some theatres and on Prime. Excellent in either format. Edited January 7, 2024 by hollywood10 1 Quote
hollywood10 Posted January 8, 2024 Author Posted January 8, 2024 Best screenplay and best international film. Not bad. Quote
small h Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Well, now I want to see it. Don't bother with Good Grief. It is, as the kids say, mid. Quote
Wilfrid Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Past Lives had a bunch of nominations, won nothing, but it was the one movie last year I really wanted to see, did see, and loved. But it’s the kind of cinema I love. I did see The Holdovers which was fine. Quote
small h Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Saltburn. That is one deeply silly movie. Quote

hollywood Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 True Detective: Night Country on HBO. With amazing Jodie Foster (whose character does not like the Beatles, Wilf). Somewhat like TD, season one. A tiny bit of "Alaska Daily." With a dollop of "Twin Peaks" based on episode one of six. So which of various murders will be solved, if any? The film has a blue-green tint like Fuji film as opposed to idk (?) Kodachrome. Alaska is a cold place (though this was filmed in Iceland). Curious that one character drinks Lone Star Beer. Quote
