Wilfrid Posted February 5, 2025 Author Posted February 5, 2025 Tuesdays and Saturdays through February, the Met is offering a walking tour for members that visits five works of art related to Black history. I went along, mainly curious about what would be selected along with maybe a dozen other people. One was Winslow Homer's amazing "Gulf Stream." The docent was explaining the geography of the stream itself and used the phrase "Gulf of Mexico." She was not expecting the round of applause she got. 4 Quote

Wilfrid Posted February 6, 2025 Author Posted February 6, 2025 One of those rare museums you can enjoy without even looking at the art. 1 Quote

Wilfrid Posted March 8, 2025 Author Posted March 8, 2025 Liquor store across the street now has plenty of Green and Yellow Chartreuse. Maybe one reason it has plenty is that the price has reached $79.99. Quote

Wilfrid Posted March 15, 2025 Author Posted March 15, 2025 Codex Books (Bowery end of Bleecker) continues to surprise me. It's on my circuit to browse once every few weeks but I rarely have cause to buy. Last year, though, I found a lovely first US edition of Morante's Aracoeli. Today, I couldn't believe my eyes. In perfect condition (absent dust jacket) US first edition of Patrick Hamilton's Twopence Colored (1928), long out of print. I never expected that. (I read a library edition years ago, probably from the London Library when I lived there.) If Hamilton sounds familiar, his most successful plays became huge movies, Gaslight and Rope. Yes, "gaslighting" is his unanticipated legacy. 1 Quote

MitchW Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 I actually attempted to, and was successful in, renewing our passports online. That included taking the photos and submitting them digitally; on the website, they have so many different requirements for the passport photo that I was certain they were going to be rejected. But - they weren't! (I used a "real" camera and a tripod, as I was not having great luck with the iPhone). 2 Quote
Wilfrid Posted March 19, 2025 Author Posted March 19, 2025 I last did that by email and it did take two rounds of photos before they were accepted. Quote
StephanieL Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 Finding sfingi for St. Joseph's Day today. I haven't had one of those since I left New York. Quote
small h Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 Going to Costco tomorrow! Very excited. Yes, I am very basic. Also, @MitchW, Vin Vero has both green and yellow Chartreuse, likely for more than you want to pay. I think they said $90 and $84, but I was very tired and could be wrong. Definitely more than $75, though. Quote
