It was pretty long, although I have to say we were the only ones at the coffee shop primed to think it's a quake and not road work nearby.

Nice to get emergency alerts a long while after the fact.

They're doing road work on the next block and I totally thought it was that.

And yeah, I thought it was pretty hilarious to get an emergency warning telling me about the earthquake like a half hour after it happened.

A good 20 seconds up here on 15th floor. I heard stuff rattling around (like my shower doors) and thought...Man, it's windy!

I'm thinking the last one I felt here was like 2011 or 2013 - much more of a sharp jolt.

None of them at all like the ones I experienced out in California.  Loma Prieta I saw the ground waving, which was...interesting.

The last "significant" one in NY was in '11. I remember being at work and I completely missed it. But  my colleagues whose offices were along the south corridor all felt it.

That was the first earthquake I ever felt.  I was working down on Spring Street, and we ended up evacuating the building.

My parents in Monmouth County and my sister in Middlesex County were completely spooked by today's quake.  My best friend in Lambertville said that things fell off her shelves.

Was that just some kind of aftershock a minute ago or something happening in my building?

Yes, the bookshelves in the living room were shaking. Me and El Gato did not notice, here in the back.

very exciting. my parents moved us back to nyc from the left coast to avoid all this earthquake nonsense. we were in alaska for the the big one in '64

That was a bad one!  Studied that in earthquake/environmental geology class I was taking at San Jose State!

My older brother was living in Alaska for that one.    It "gave him religion", not that it was apparent afterward.

I was born on the Central California coast so grew up with medium sized ones.   Was taught to dash to a door frame.    Now they teach you to "duck and cover", probably because there aren't enough door frames to go around.    During Loma Prieta, I was firmly wedged in our back door, with dual egress.

Text from my wife advised me not to stand near bookshelves. In my apartment I would have to stay in the bathroom to comply.

Also, being from Oakland, she told me she grew up with this stuff and aftershocks are not a big deal. Very comforting.

She's right unless what you felt was a foreshock and the earthquake is yet to come.
