bloviatrix
Come on, you've lived here all your life. Surely you've felt them before. We do get them on occasion.

Wilfrid
I do remember a previous one but it was so mild I didn't know what it was until I saw the news reports. This one was...noticeable.
small h
I heard stuff knocking around in the living room and went out there to check on things. Cat was flat on the floor, staring at the bookcase. I guess the chachkas were shaking. I don't think earthquakes in NYC are all that rare, as @bloviatrix said. We're in a pretty active fault zone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramapo_Fault
Orik
It was pretty long, although I have to say we were the only ones at the coffee shop primed to think it's a quake and not road work nearby. Nice to get emergency alerts a long while after the fact.
Sneakeater
They're doing road work on the next block and I totally thought it was that. And yeah, I thought it was pretty hilarious to get an emergency warning telling me about the earthquake like a half hour after it happened. I heard stuff rattling around (like my shower doors) and thought...Man, it's windy! I'm thinking the last one I felt here was like 2011 or 2013 - much more of a sharp jolt. None of them at all like the ones I experienced out in California. Loma Prieta I saw the ground waving, which was...interesting.
bloviatrix
The last "significant" one in NY was in '11. I remember being at work and I completely missed it. But my colleagues whose offices were along the south corridor all felt it. Edited April 5 by bloviatrix
bloviatrix
If only we had access to all the old MF posts. I bet we would find conversation about the one in '11. Edited April 5 by bloviatrix

My parents in Monmouth County and my sister in Middlesex County were completely spooked by today's quake. My best friend in Lambertville said that things fell off her shelves. Sneakeater
Was that just some kind of aftershock a minute ago or something happening in my building?
Sneakeater
I guess I have to wait a half hour for the emergency notification.

voyager
My older brother was living in Alaska for that one. It "gave him religion", not that it was apparent afterward. I was born on the Central California coast so grew up with medium sized ones. Was taught to dash to a door frame. Now they teach you to "duck and cover", probably because there aren't enough door frames to go around. During Loma Prieta, I was firmly wedged in our back door, with dual egress. Text from my wife advised me not to stand near bookshelves. In my apartment I would have to stay in the bathroom to comply. Also, being from Oakland, she told me she grew up with this stuff and aftershocks are not a big deal. Very comforting.
AaronS
my kid called me and told me that it was very strong at her school (a few blocks from my place) and there was no way the books hadn’t destroyed my amp.

She's right unless what you felt was a foreshock and the earthquake is yet to come.
